History
The first tanks M48 in the Israeli army came from the Federal Republic of Germany (then West Germany) as part of war reparations for the Holocaust. They were tank vehicles of the M48A1 and M48A2 types. The United States learned about this deal from the media, which monitored the transfer and sealed the sale of the tanks from Germany so that later they could supply tanks to Israel directly and only.
The tanks have been out of active service with the IDF for some time.
Description
The Magach 3 tanks are American-made M48A1 and M48A2 Patton tanks that have been modified by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Ordnance Corps. The improvements and upgrades involve the replacement of the original 90 mm US gun with the famous British L7 rifled gun, 105 mm caliber. In addition, an "Urdan" gun turret was added to the tank's turret. As with most Israeli equipment, machine guns were used extensively, namely the M1919A4 / FN BAR/M240, both identical in 7.62 mm calibre, and the large-calibre M2HB, in 12.7 mm calibre. Changes also affect the gasoline engine, which has been replaced with a new AVDS-1790-2A diesel engine, including the replacement of the old transmission with a new one, the Allison CD-850-6. And lastly, the installation of more modern and powerful radio equipment.
Later, the Magach 3 tanks were fitted with Blazer ERA reactive armor.
Like other tanks of the M48 type, this one suffered from a very significant malady. This was the highly flammable, hydraulic fluid used in the tank's systems. In the event of a tank fire, it posed a fatal danger to the tank crew.
