On 5.7.1940 In 6 authorized WaPruf to commission the development of a new light tank fighter intended for the Panzer-Division and the Infaanterie-Division (mot.). [Thus, Rheinmetall-Borsig was commissioned by Pz.Kpfw.II n.A. (VK 9.01) to develop a light tank fighter based on the M.A.N. platform, Pz.Kpfw.II n.A. (VK 9.01). The main armament was to be a modified 5 cm PaK 38 anti-tank gun. The gun was lafeted in a turret open from above. According to the plans of 30 May 1941 (Panzerprogramm 41), 1200 l.Pz.Jäger (Pz.Sfl.5 cm) auf VK 9.03 Fgst. were to be produced, and another 828 units for motorized infantry and reconnaissance units. Two prototype machines were to be completed after 9/1941. These were to be assigned to 3./Pz.Jäger-Kompanie 601 (the unit was formed by renaming 1. Kp./Pz.Jg.Abt. 8 on 29/1/1942, on 21/4/1942 it was renamed again and to 3.Kp./Pz.Jg.Abt. (Sfl.)559). Mention of these machines is also made on 20.8.1942, where one machine is listed as operational. As part of this unit they fought on the eastern front.
