Nanchang Q-5 - version overview


Q-5 - introductory variant, fighter derived from J-6 , but with a new bow with separate air intakes to the engines, new wings and a small bomb bay, 6 hangers under the fuselage and wings; perhaps 400 pieces built
Q-5 I - battle variant with extended range, bomb bay removed, another pair of hangers under the fuselage, a total of 8 hangers
Q-5 IA - modernization of Q-5 I with new SH-1I sight and additional avionics and modified fuel system; approx. 600 pcs including Q-5 I
Q-5A - variant Q-5 with extended range designed to carry the KB-1 nuclear bomb; several dozen pieces
Q-5B (Q-5 II) - Q-5 IA with laser rangefinder HK-15, sight SH-1II, radar signaling and other small changes; small amount
Q-5B torpedo - an unrelated anti-ship variant (the previous type of sse at the time still named Q-5 II) with a different bow, larger wing area and the ability to carry two Ju-2 torpedoes; probably 6 pcs including conversions
Q-5B rocket - similar to the previous one with the ability to carry two anti-ship missiles YJ-81; perhaps only a prototype
Q-5C (Q-5 III) - A-5B with western avionics and increased load capacity, 10 hangers; several dozen pieces
Q-5D (Q-5 IV) - A-5B with modified Chinese avionics, 10 hangers, designed as an alternative to Q-5K/Q-5M; several dozen pieces
Q-5E/Q-5F - development of Q-5D from the 90s, designed for bomb attacks with semi-active laser guidance, the ability to carry a conformal additional tank under the fuselage; one variant perhaps served as a marking target (hunter) and the other to attack (killer); perhaps only prototypes
Q-5J - two-digit training-combat variant, replacement for JJ-6; dozens of Q-5D conversions (?)
Q-5K - A-5B with Thomson-CSF avionics and Sextant Avionique, 10 hangers, development terminated for economic reasons; 2 conversions
Q-5L - modernization of Q-5C with precisely guided bombs LS-500J, digital cockpit and larger additional tanks; 1 conversion
Q-5M - A-5B with avionics Aeritalia (similar to AMX), 12 hangers, development terminated due to embargo r.1989; 2 conversions
Q-5N - modernization of Q-5D similar to Q-5L; 1 conversion



A-5 - export designation for Q-5 (and/or Q-5 I) for North Korea
A-5B - export designation Q-5 II; approx. 150 pcs
A-5C - export designation Q-5C; approx. 150 pcs
A-5K - planned export designation Q-5K
A-5M - planned export designation Q-5M
