One of two, competing but very similar designs in the T-35 heavy 5 turret tank replacement program. The other was the SMK type.

The development of the T-100 was carried out by a design group led by E.Š. Paley from the Leningrad Plant No. 185 (Kirov Plant). Compared to the competing SMK, the T-100's chassis had an older leaf-spring suspension design, while its competitor SMK had torsion bar suspension. However, both designs were characterized by the old and outdated multi-tower tank design. The T-100, like the competitor SMK, carried two turrets. The larger one was located in the center of the hull and the other smaller one in front of it. The main larger turret carried a 76.2 mm L-10 gun, but this was almost immediately replaced by the more modern L-11. The small turret was laden with a 45 mm gun. The machine also received three machine guns. One each were mated to the cannons and one was in the command dome on the roof of the larger turret. The number of crewmen was, according to various, contradictory sources, 6-8 men. The most probable number was 7 men. A self-propelled gun, the SU-100U, was based on the T-100. At the same time, there were projects for a version of the T-100Z, which was to carry a 152 mm howitzer. The gunner and landing vehicle did not pass the consideration stage either. An incomplete prototype was shown to Stalin in 8/1939. The type was not mass-produced, as the path of monstrous multi-towered giants proved to be a dead-end development path, and preference was given to the modern single-towered KV-1.
The prototype T-100 was combat deployed in the war against Finland in late 1939/40 as part of the 20th Heavy Tank Brigade. There is little knowledge of its combat activity. After the signing of the armistice with Finland, the machine was withdrawn and subsequently converted to a self-propelled gun SU-100U.
In addition, there was a T-100Z project.
