Když se generál Dampierre dozvěděl, že Bratislavu chrání jen slabá posádka, rozhodl se pro rychlou akci. Vyrazil k městu a pokusil se nepřítele zaskočit. K tomu mu měla posloužit i tajná dohoda s některými šlechtici a měšťany.

Ráno dne 9. října se objevil před městě s šesti tisíci muži a devíti obléhacími petardami a celkem snadno opanoval předměstí a šance při Dunaji. Avšak když vyrazil se svými mušketýri ke hradu a dal znamení k zavěšení petard, byl rozpoznán moravskými vojáky, kteří se na hradě nacházeli. Těm se pak podařilo Dampierra zastřelit. Po této šťastné trefě se posádce podařilo jeho muže odrazit. Císařští vojáci pak odtáhli zpátky do Vídně.
