He was born 15.6.1918 in the village of Reidendorf in Moravia as the son of a landowner. 01./1939 joining the Wehrmacht, training in the 2nd Infantry Motorized Division, Mot.Art.Rgt. 2. 1.11.1940 Lieutenant in reserve. In Russia, as a battery officer in the autumn of 1941 he received the Iron Cross II.Class, 02./1942 Iron Cross I.Class, promoted to lieutenant. From 01./1943 commander of the staff battery at Stu.Gesch.Abt. 909, later commander of the 2nd battery. heavy fighting in the defense, then alongside the infantry in the attack at Kursk where he was wounded for the third time (by the end of the war a total of thirteen times). For his achievements during the retreat fighting on the Dnieper River 3.8.1943 German Cross in gold. As a captain (1.7.1943) he received an honorary commendation of the commander of the OBdH. In the winter of 1943 a short time battery commander in his old regiment Pz.Art.Rgt. 116, then returned to the 2./Stu.Gesch.Brig. 909. For his achievements in support of the 110th Infantry Division, he was named in the Land Army Honor Roll. In the summer of 1944 retreat fighting on the central and northern section of the front, then in the main battles in Kuronsk. 01.1945 took command of Stu.Gesch.Brig. 341 on the Western Front, for successful counterattacks in the assembly of the 59th Infantry Division nominated to the Oaken Boughs. The Army Personnel Department was not opposed in principle, but due to lack of recommendation from Army Group B the award was suspended. Thus, no official award was made, but the Society of Knight's Cross Holders accepted the award and maintains Montag's decoration in its records with the date 9 May 1945 as the 873rd recipient of the Oaken Bough. After his release from captivity and civilian occupation, Montag joined the Bundeswehr in 1957 at the rank of captain. He commanded the supply company of Tank Battalion 23, from 1959 acting commander of Tank Battalion 74, retiring at the rank of lieutenant colonel. He died 18.11.1990 in Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia.
