He was born on October 5, 1918 in Eulau, Bohemia. Called to military service 9.1939. He underwent western and eastern campaigns in the ranks of the 115th Artillery Regiment in the group 46. infantry division. For special performance in the service he was sent to an officer's course from which he returned to the regiment in the rank of lieutenant (1.2.1942). In 1943 he switched to anti-tank artillery. He commanded the platoon 1./schw.Pz.Jäger-Abt. 656 deployed to the focus of the fighting 1.Pz.Armee on the bridgehead near Nikopol. For his independent counterattack, which closed the Soviet breakthrough and the destruction of 21 tanks, he received the Knight's Cross on December 17, 1943 and was named in the Wehrmacht reports. During the rest of the war he was promoted to lieutenant. Kretschmer died on May 28, 1987 in Essen in North Rhine-Westphalia.
