He was born on 9.11.1919 in Falkenou a.d. Eger, Czechoslovakia, the son of a bank clerk. The dates of his service in the army until 1943 are not known, only that Knaf served as a non-commissioned officer and was promoted to officer in the field in 1943. 1943 he commanded a platoon in 8./Fsch.PZ.Gren.Rgt. 2 in Fallschirm-PD Hermann Göring on the Italian front. On 8.12.1943 he and his platoon captured Hill 907 in the Battle of Salerno, no reinforcements were available and any retreat would have had severe consequences for the whole regiment, he held Knaf despite heavy losses of position. Here, in artillery fire, he found death with his men. He was posthumously awarded the Knight's Cross on 5 April 1944.
