In October 1940 he was drafted into the army and assigned to the Aviation School in Trenčianske Biskupice. In 1942 he joined the Air Regiment in Nitra as a pilot in the rank of sergeant. In 1943 he underwent a flying course on multi-engine aircraft and in January 1944 he was assigned to the 2nd Squadron in Spišská Nová Ves.
After the outbreak of the SNP, he actively participated in combat operations as a member of Combined Squadrons at Tri Duby Airport. In mid-October 1944 he left the insurgent territory and after landing on the liberated Polish territory he enlisted in the 1st MS. arm. choir. He completed retraining for Soviet aircraft at the training center in Przemyśl and in early January 1945 was assigned to the 1st MS. smld. At the end of February he moved to the 2nd MS. slp, in March was relocated to the 3rd MS. bilp, with which he participated in combat operations in the Ostrava region.
After the war he was promoted to sergeant and awarded the Czechoslovak. war cross, in October 1945 he became a professional soldier. At the beginning of June 1946, he was transferred to LU in Prostějov, where he worked as a flying teacher at the PŠP. In October 1946, he started as a cut-off. to the 2nd year of LVA in Hradec Králové. After its completion in June 1948, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant of the Air Force and transferred to the LVÚ in Letňany, where he worked as a pilot of a test squadron.
In September and October 1949 at the Žatec airport he completed a training course in flying on airplanes S-92/ CS-92. At the beginning of March 1950, he took command of the LVÚ test squadron in the rank of lieutenant of the Air Force. In August 1951 (as a captain of the Air Force) was appointed commander of the 1st Air Fighter Regiment in Mlada, where there was retraining of its members for S-102/ MiG-15. In May 1952, the regiment was relocated to České Budějovice, where at the end of August 1952 he became commander of the 1st Air Fighter Division (already in the rank of Air Force Major). As a leader, he "led" acrobatic groups, which performed group acrobatics at the air days in Ruzyně in 1953, 1954, 1955. In 1956 he performed solo acrobatics on an airplane MiG-17F.
In October 1956, in the rank of colonel, he entered the Academic Improvement Course, from December 1957 he studied at the Academy of the General Staff in Moscow and after returning from September 1959 he worked at the MNO in Prague, where he was appointed ZV Commander of the Air Force and PVOS for the Air Force. In October 1960 he was appointed commander of the 7th A PVOS and Air Force. In September 1961 he was appointed commander of the 1st SSMSL in Hradec Králové, from May 1962 reorganized to the 10th LA. In October 1961, Jozef Kúkel was appointed to the rank of major general and in October 1967 he was promoted to lieutenant general. In August 1964, on the air day for the 20th anniversary of the SNP in Sliač demonstrated acrobatics in the aircraft Su-7BM.
He remained at the head of the 10th LA until July 1969, when he was recalled as part of "inspections" and placed in a personnel arrangement. In March 1971 he was transferred to the reserve.
Genpor. Ing. Jozef Kúkel died in 1994 and is buried in Hradec Králové-Malšovice.

He was born 10. July 1921 in the village Dolné Hámre (now Hodruša-Hámre) in the district New Bana Slovakia. Father Ján was born in 1880 in Banská Štiavnica, died in 1927. Mother Marie, née Nováková was born in 1885 in Štiavnické Bane, in the home, died in 1930. Father ran a business and hospitality. To the general school in the years 1927 – 1932 in Banském Hodruži, in the years 1932 – 1936 went to four classes of real grammar school in Banském Štiavnica. From 1. 7. 1948 test pilot at the test squadron of the Aviation research institute in Prague – Letňany, to 30. may 1950 appointed commander of this squadron. 15. 8. 1951 to 15. 8. 1952 the commander of the 1. fighter aviation regiment in the Young, later in České Budějovice. From 16.8. 1952 to 1.10. 1956 the commander of the 1. fighter air division in České Budějovice. From 2.10.1956 army improved course in the VAAZ in Brno, from 2.8.1957 to 15. 11. 1957 prep course to study in the USSR.


From 1.December 1957 to 1. September 1959 to study at the Academy of the General staff of the Soviet union in Moscow.
