Like BB - Fuso sunk 25.10.1944 in Surigao Channel in battle with US TaskForce 77 (USS Pennsylvania ( BB-38 ), USS Mississippi (BB-41), USS Tennessee (BB-43), USS California (BB-44), USS Maryland (BB-46), and USS West Virginia ( BB-48 ) ), commanded by Admiral. Jesse Oldendorf.


Torpedoes from the destroyer USS DD-593 Killen were probably also responsible for the sinking of this ship.

The battleship convoy of Yamashiro and Fuso in their last action in the Surigao Strait was commanded by Vice Admiral Shoji Nishimura.


This grouping had the designation "Force C" or "Southern Force".
In addition to the battleships mentioned above, this included the heavy cruiser Mogami - sunk in the same action and the 4 destroyers Michisio - sunk, Yamagumo - sunk, Asagumo - sunk and Shigure.

The battleship Yamashiro sank at 04:19 am on 25 October 1944, position 10-22N, 125-21E. Three sailors were rescued and captured by the US destroyer USS Claxton (DD-571). The remaining crew of about 1400 men perished (including the ship's commander, Rear Admiral Shinoda, and the squadron leader, Admiral Nishimura).
