He studied jurisprudence at the University of León, Nicaragua. In 1824 he is a deputy in the Legislative Assembly of Honduras.

Subsequently, in 1826, he becomes mayor and governor of Tegucigalpa, an office he holds until 1827.

On June 30, 1828, he is appointed Head of State of Honduras, by a resolution of the Legislative Assembly of Honduras.

During his time in office, the parliament, the country's legislative assembly, passed a decree extending religious freedoms to all religious communities in the country. He held the office of Head of State of Honduras until December 4, 1829.

On February 1, 1836, he was installed as Head of State of El Salvador, and to this office he was installed by Gen. F. Morazán, of whom he was a relative.

During his tenure, a cholera epidemic broke out in the country, causing great concern among the population. In March 1836, he decided to expel Gen. Nicolás Espinoza from the country, and also stripped him of his title of meritorious for the fatherland.

As a result of the cholera epidemic, salaries for the government, except for public employees, were stopped, and all of these salaries were used to fight the epidemic. In January 1837, the epidemic is widespread in all areas of the country.

On March 8, 1837, the Legislative Assembly passes the budget for the year and authorizes the water supply and supply to the city of San Miguel from Moncagua.

Because of the epidemic, the government establishes sanitary commissions, which are located in the capitals of each of the country's departments. 5/23/1837 Riots break out in Zacatecoluca and Cojutepeque, with the latter resulting in killings and looting.

That same day he entrusts the government office to Timote Menéndez, and he returns to office again on 7 June 1837.
The same month, another uprising occurs in the city of Santa Anna, but is suppressed, with the government issuing a decree of amnesty to all those who joined the movement.

On January 6, 1838, he hands over the office of Head of State of El Salvador to his successor Timote Menéndez.

After hordes under the command of Rafael Carrera assassinate the federal vice president Gregorio Salazar in Guatemala, Vigil becomes the provisional president of the federal republic in 1838.

In 1838 Nicaragua, Honduras and Costa Rica seceded from the federation as did Guatemala on April 17, 1839, this left El Salvador as a single state and so on March 31, 1840 the federation is officially dissolved and Vigil as provisional president ends.

8.4.1840 Diego Vigil and Francisco Morazán leave together towards Panama and Costa Rica.

After the death of Morazán in San José, Costa Rica, Vigil goes to Granadz, Nicaragua, where he lives until his death in 1845.
