On the banks of the Ebro River at Agoncillo - Logrono, an important point on the road to Santiago, is the base of the BHELMA III Manoeuvring Helicopter Battalion.

Short history
This unit was formed when the first 6 helicopters arrived here with the personnel to operate them on 26/11/1974 under General Instruction No.174/205 dated 28/5/1974 and the unit was named Helicopter Unit 3 UHEL III. The unit was trained and equipped with material from the base at Colmenar Viejo.
Moving the unit with material, men, took two years, when all this was moved from Colmenar Viejo to a new base in Agoncillo. Now it was just a matter of waiting to see who would be the first commander, and that was José Perote Pellón.
On April 1-6, 1975, the unit participates in Exercise "Gállego-75", the first exercise it conducts from its base in La Rioja, Agoncillo. In May of the same year, the unit also participates in the first international exercise Operacion Iberia VI with 6 HU-10 in Calvi, Corsica.
A month later, on 24 June 1975, the unit receives 6 HR-12 (OH-58) helicopters to make the unit also capable of reconnaissance missions and to form a reconnaissance body in its structure, which greatly increased its operability. In September 1978, the unit completes the first of its mountain flying courses.
On 18 March 1979, the unit receives its first three ALOUETTE III helicopters, although only briefly, as they are reassigned to the Air Force over time, but in this short time they have greatly increased the unit's ability to operate in the mountains and its reconnaissance capabilities.

Since its inception, the unit has participated in a number of joint actions both military and civilian such as:
* "Operation Alazán" cooperation with the Mountain Division "Navarra", where the helicopter unit was fully incorporated into the divisional forces from 23.3.1981, in order to make the Franco-Spanish border in the Basque-Navarra sector inaccessible. This operation lasted until the following year.
* "Operation Ícaro Pax" security operation in connection with the Pope's visit to Spain.
* "Operation Ícaro Naranja", in collaboration with the Civil Protection, providing security in connection with the holding of the 1982 FIFA World Cup.
* "Flood" support and rescue work for the civilian population
- Levante: October 1982
- Catalonia: November 1982
- Basque Country: August 1983
* "Fire-fighting operations"

28.4 to 3.7.1991 the unit participated in Operation Alpha-Kilo in Kurdistan. The operation involved 10 personnel and two helicopters, in order to assist the civilian population.
On 4.4.1986 the unit received new helicopters, 6 HR-15 helicopters to replace the older HR-12 helicopters in reconnaissance, surveillance and combat reconnaissance missions.
In 1988, the aeromobile forces of the Land Army FAMET were reorganized on the basis of General Instruction 4/88 of 15.6, changing the name of the unit from the Helicopter Unit (UHEL III), to the Battalion of Manoeuvring Helicopters III (BHELMA III). From August 1998 to December 2000, BHELMA III carried out humanitarian as well as peacekeeping missions in the former Yugoslavia, based in Ploçe (Croatia), forming part of the Multinational South-Eastern Division "Salamandre"; 25 members of the unit participated in this operation, together with 2 machines.

The next mission outside the territory was Kosovo, where 55 personnel and 4 helicopters participated in the operation, based in Pristina. The battalion deployed 43 personnel to Afghanistan in the south-east of the country as part of the Asphuel XIII contingent, where they are participating in the NATO peacekeeping mission in that country as well as in humanitarian tasks. Throughout its history, the unit has also supported troops in Melilla as well as those in North Africa and the adjacent islands.

The unit has had 7 commanders since its inception.
The battalion is based at Agoncillo in Logrono province and is subordinate to FAMET Land Army Aeromobile Force Command.
