The Type 77 armoured personnel carrier is very similar to the Soviet BTR-50K and Czechoslovak OT-62. Compared to these machines, it has a more powerful engine, which allows it to reach higher speeds both on land and in water. The specific power of the vehicle is also higher than that of the aforementioned types. The Type -77's power plant was largely taken from the Type 63. The fighting compartment of the vehicle is completely covered and located in the front part of the hull. Access to the fighting compartment is by a side door on the right side of the hull and hatches in the ceiling of the fighting compartment. The compartment is located on the floor of the fighting compartment. The fighting compartment is equipped with three firing ports, observation ports and a ventilation system for venting the combustion gases produced during firing. A searchlight is installed on the left side of the hull above the fighting compartment. The engine compartment of the vehicle is located at the rear of the hull. The Type 77 is fully amphibious, in water it is powered by two water thrusters located on either side of the rear hull. For navigation, the machine is equipped with two pumps in the forward section of the breakwater to pump out water ingressed by leaks in the hull. The Type 77 is used in the Chinese military as a command vehicle, a fuel resupply vehicle, an ambulance and a cargo transporter.
Version: Type 77-1 is equipped with three loading ramps, which, when installed in the rear of the vehicle, are used to pull and mount an 85 mm Type 56 cannon or a 122 mm Type 54 howitzer.
Type 77-2 basic type without loading ramps.
In addition, the Type 77 is used as a self-propelled launcher for the HQ-2J PLRS (Chinese version of the Russian S-75 Dvina). In this version, the vehicle chassis is extended and has 7 running wheels.
