After arming Soviet airborne troops with BMD-1 combat vehicles (БМД-1) and armored personnel carriers BTR-D (БТР-Д) (Objekt 926 (объект 926)), airborne troops have almost equaled motorized artillery troops in modern maneuver warfare capabilities. Only one unsolved problem remained - artillery support, since in the 1960s and 1970s only towed artillery systems were in the armament of the Airborne D-30 (Д-30) (122 mm howitzer), D-44 (Д-44) (85 mm cannon), D-48 (Д-48) (122 mm anti-tank gun), and 120 mmm and 82 mm mortars. The self-propelled guns ASU-57 (АСУ-57) were already obsolete and unsuitable for use in modern warfare, and the more modern and powerful SU-85 (СУ-85) and ASU-85 (АСУ-85) were designed for anti-tank warfare and could not perform all the tasks required of artillery.
For this reason, a new artillery system for the needs of the VDV began to be developed based on the BMD-1 (chassis designated Object 924 (объект 924)), for which the index 2S2 (2С2) and the codename Fialka (Фиалка) were designated. The system used the 122 mm gun 2A32 (2А32) also used in the howitzer 2S1 Gvozdika (2С1 "Гвоздика"). The vehicle was not accepted into armament as the BMD-1 chassis was unable to absorb the power of the 122 mm 2A32 gun when firing. In addition to the howitzer, a 120 mm mortar with the index 2S8 Landysh (2С8 "Ландыш") was also developed on the same chassis (also not introduced into armament).
