the History of the ORP Ryś

As soon as Poland after the termination of the Even. world war ii gained independence and also access to the sea, began logically with the building of the own fleet. First, relying on surface ships, which took over or bought from other states. Later, the planned construction of the ships already according to their own needs and requirements. According to the development plan, the fleet should be part of the Polish flot also submarines.
During the December 1924 was drawn up an inventory of the technical requirements for the new ships, but Poland at that time had a shipyard that would be capable of the type of submarine to build. The Polish government was forced to go to another country. The choice fell, mainly for political and economic reasons,to France.
After a series of negotiations was 1. December 1926 signed the contract for the construction of 3 universal, minh-torpedo submarines. Originally it was planned the construction of up to 9 submarines, later it was for economic reasons reduced to only 3 ships. Submarines should be able to perform offensive and defensive tasks, so their armament consisted not only of the mines, but even 10 torpedoes. The new submarine was based on project of the French submarines of the year 1917 "Pierre Chailey". Each of the new submarines has finally built in a different shipyard, which subsequently turned out as a not very happy solution - the ships have a lot of manufacturing defects and unfinished work, were considerably trouble, which was later mostly at ORP "Ryś" tragic consequences. The defects were mostly removed during the service, long after the completion of the construction.
One of the causes of the problems was probably the lack of experience of the selected shipyards building ships of such type and size. Despite the above shortcomings, however, were submarines significant strengthening of the Polish navy, which at that time consisted of several old torpedo boats and gunboats.

28. may 1927 was in the shipyard Chantiers de La Noire in Nantes laid the keel of the first of three submarines of the Polish navy. The first rivet solemnly drove the then Polish ambassador in France, Alfred Chłapowski. The whole class was later named "Wilk", according to the first submarine running on the water.
22.April 1929 was a new ship launched on the water, and mrs. Wanda Poznańská, a woman member of the Polish embassy in Paris, it christened the ORP "Ryś". In September 1929 is officially her first commander became captain marynarki Edward Szystowski.

the Construction of the ORP "Ryś"

ORP "Ryś" and they finished up to February 1931, when started the first tests of a new submarine in the shipyard. These lasted until the may 1931 and in their course have been removed the detected defects. In June and July ORP "Ryś" sailed out repeatedly on the test cruises. Tests and trials have been discontinued 20. July 1931, and because the manufacturer did not add some parts of the equipment, the command of the Polish navy decided to move the new submarines to Poland, where she had later come back to Nantes for the missing parts.
2. August 1931 was on a submarine ceremonially hoisted the Polish flag and ORP "Ryś" is ranked in the Polish fleet. After the necessary preparations set sail submarine 14. August 1931 from Nantes and headed to Gdynia.

ORP "Ryś enters for the first time to Gdynia 19. August 1931

19. August 1931 ORP "Ryś", as the first Polish submarine in history, sailed into the Polish water and liberated in the gdyńském port. On the submarine to take on board a full crew, and from September until November was practicing to control a submarine, operate equipment, ORP "Ryś" sailed out on the practice shooting on the surface and under water.
20. November he sailed ORP "Ryś" along with dělovým boat ORP "Generał Haller" to the sea, to welcome and escorted to the port of the next new submarine - ORP "Wilk" which is would reach from France. 23. November 1931 the ships met together and entered Gdynia.
9. December 1931 was under the command of captain marynarki Aleksandra Mohuczyho (commander ORP "Wilk") created an operational group of the submarines and their crew once again began to cycle through a series of exercises at sea and on the waterfront.

Because at the end of 1931 came news from France that the missing spare parts are ready, 6. January 1932 he sailed ORP "Ryś" on the way to Cherbourg. To to the Swedish island of Bornholm it was accompanied by a sister submarine ORP "Wilk".
14.January 1932, after a dramatic voyage in a heavy storm, sailed ORP "Ryś" in the French port of Cherbourg and began assembling the missing parts of the equipment.
In February 1932 ORP "Ryś" returned to Poland and began another cycle of training and practice cruises, which should ensure the best possible combat readiness of the submarine and her crew.
1.may 1932 was the newly formed Submarine division, whose commander became the komandor podporucznik Eugeniusz Pławski in its flagship ORP "Zbik". The division included all three subs - ORP "Zbik", ORP "Wilk" and ORP "Ryś" ,and also the torpedo boat ORP "Kujawiak"and the training sailing ship "Lwów". all submarines were assigned new identification characters, so the tower ORP "Ryś" was painted a large letter "R".

August 1932 then the ORP "Ryš" sailed out on a shakedown cruise, primarily to Pucké bay, or the crew was practicing on the deck of the submarine, demounted at the waterfront.
23. August 1932 in the 18 h ORP "Zbik", ORP "Wilk" and ORP "Ryś" flown on an official visit to Stockholm. 25. August in the early hours of the morning near the Swedish coast (near the lighthouse Sandhamn) met with the destroyers, ORP "Burza" and ORP "Wicher" and together entered Stockhlomu. During the visit, 27. August 1932, received the commander of ORP "Ryś", kapitan marynarki Edward Szystowski, Swedish honours.
The whole fleet left Sweden 29. August in the 07:00 and headed back to Gdynia. Shortly after midnight, 1. September 1932 all subs would go in gdyńském port.

From September 1932 until march 1933 then the ORP "Ryś" was the exercise of combat readiness.
In march 1933 ORP "Ryś" with its sister submarine ORP "Zbik" dropped by on a courtesy visit to Helsinki, finland.
In may 1933 succeeded in the command of Edward Szystowského, which was promoted and transferred to command the Naval air division, kapitan marynarki Aleksander Łoś.

Additional training and patrol cruises in the year 1933 and 1934 broke in August 1934 common cruise all three submarines, during which ORP "Ryś" and its sister ships visited Dutch Amsterdam the Norwegian Oslo. Then in Sundu met with the destroyers, ORP "Wicher" and ORP "Burza" and together (7. and 8. August) were kept in Copenhagen, denmark, and later still two days in the Swedish Karlskroně.

In the period from march June 1935 ORP "Ryś" with another submarine ORP "Zbik" participated in exercises in the Pucké bay, during which the submarine practicing an emergency ascent, the gunnery and torpedo attacks on the surface and under water.
14.July has all three Polish submarines the Estonian Tallinn, in which they were resident on an international visit from the 17. 20. July 1935. 22. July then come back to Gdynia.

ORP "Ryś" is overwhelming during one of the training cruises

In the period between August 1935 and February 1936 submarine has done a lot of practice patrol voyages in the Baltic sea. In the second half of 1935 was also removed anti-aircraft cannon 40 mm and replaced by dvouhlavňovým anti-aircraft machine gun Hotchkiss caliber 13.2 mm.

In February 1936 there was an international incident, when the ORP "Ryś" maneuvered below the surface of the gulf of Finland and covertly approached the area around the base of the Soviet navy in the Krondštatu. He was, however, discovered by soviet patrol boats and forced to surface. On the surface everything fortunately it cleared up and the submarine headed back to Gdynia.

1. April 1936 occurred on ORP "Ryś" to the disaster. During the attitudes in the military port of Oksywie occurred in the 7:30 an explosion of hydrogen escaping from the battery accumulators. As a result of the explosion, the effects of which were fortunately weakened due to open vlezům and waterproof bulkheads, injured 4 crew members with severe injuries and 6 sailors were wounded lightly. The Incident had a sequel, for reasons of misfortune has been dismissed the previous commander of the Submarine division, komandor podporucznik Eugeniusz Pławski. In function, it replaced the komandor podporucznik Alexander Mohuczy.
After repairs the submarine back into service, and again several times to set sail on a training cruise into the waters of the Baltic. 7. July 1936 was removed kapitan marynarki Łoś, a few days later the new commander of the ORP "Ryś" became the kapitan marynarki Aleksander Grochowski. Already 14. July 1936 then the ORP "Ryś" with the two sister submarines visited unofficially Estonia, when all the submarines would go on to do so within in the mouth of the Narvy.

Until the beginning of the war, then the ORP "Ryś" participated in regular training and patrol cruises, which nevyznačovaly nothing extraordinary. During this time, it is worth noting perhaps just the removal of the identification of the character "R" from the tower of the submarine 1. July 1937, 10. July, 1937, then the ORP "Ryś" and ORP "Zbik" participating in demonstrations for the public to do so within Gdynia.

From the beginning of the year 1939, as they plunged into overdrive, the international situation, were the voyage of the submarine more and more focused on the combat readiness of the crew.

ORP "Ryś" in the interwar period

24. August 1939 was declared the mobilization of Submarine division. ORP "Ryś" loaded on deck 10 torpedoes, 22 minutes, 114 rounds of ammunition for the deck gun and 4500 rounds of ammunition for the machine gun. Commander of ORP "Ryś" received 7 000 USD in gold and the Polish banknotes and on the submarine also held the control of all mechanisms and control of combat readiness.
26.August 1939 the submarine was sent into a military port of Hel.

1. September 1939, shortly after the first attacks, received the commander of ORP "Ryś" the order to sail on the sea and in the 06:00 submarine rebounded from the waterfront. During the day, then a radio operator ORP "Ryś" captured two other radiographs. The first of them ordered all submarines to operate underwater, the second order directed the commander to open the envelope marked as "X". This envelope contained the orders relating to the implementation of the plan of "Worek", according to which he had ORP "Ryś" operate in Gdańské bay in the area northeast of Hel.
During the cruise, the Polish submarine spotted at a distance of less than 5 Nm, the German destroyer, several minesweepers, and also the periscope of an unknown submarine. Later they were recognized by the destroyers "Wolfgang Zenker" and "Erich Steinbrinck", several German minesweepers and fighter submarines. In the indicated sector, then the ORP "Ryś" he arrived in 17:26. Until the evening then submarine patrol in their sector, but without the possibility to attack someone.

2. September 1939 komandor podporucznik Grochowski decided to leave the marked sector and set sail with the submarine more to the north of Hel. Around 09:30 periscope ORP "Ryś" spotted from the air by German aircraft. He summoned another aircraft on the submarine several times attacked and overthrew a total of 26 bombs. The aircraft also led to the submarine, the German submarine chasers, of which ORP "Ryś" monitor. It is, however, the Germans managed to eventually escape.
In 11:35 patrol in the periscope saw the German destroyer code-named "Z-9" ("Wolfgang Zenker") accompanied by minolovkami and fighters submarines. During the monitoring of the German ships, however, the submarine was discovered and attacked by depth charges. The German ships were haunted by the ORP "Ryś" up to 18:45, when they attacked last time. Later, the commander Grochowski concluded that there is no danger and gave the order to surface. During the voyage on the surface, it was found that from damaged external tanks leaking fuel. The submarine remained on the surface and were charging the battery.

3. September 1939 shortly after midnight the guard in the tower spotted a German destroyer and the submarine immediately hid under the surface. During the day, then the submarine followed in the periscope depth of the surrounding surface, but in my area saw no goal.

4. September 1939, the situation repeated itself and the submarine again at night looking for shelter below the surface before nepřáteským a fast boat. Shortly thereafter, however, the kapitan marynarki Grochowski ordered to sail back to the surface and ORP"Ryś" began the German ship, firing from a machine gun. The German ship was apparently struck by the sudden attack and left.
At the time, when the sun came up over the horizon she saw a patrol in the periscope of the enemy submarine and the commander ordered to fire 2 torpedoes. Attack of the ORP "Ryś" was, however, unsuccessful and in the sky appeared, the German bombers, which, on the Polish submarine attacked by depth charges. The aircraft followed the submarine according to the spots the escaping fuel and the situation looked for the ORP "Ryś" greatly adversely. Then also from the Polish submarine sending an open text message "Jestem osaczony, proszę for help, 54° N and 19°W" (I'm surrounded by, I beg for help, 54° N and 19°W) and subsequently an encrypted message about ORP "Ryś" back to Hel. The command of the fleet replied to the order to stay to do so within and nevplouvat to the port. Before noon steeped ORP "Ryś" approached Hel, he emerged and asked on the radio for permission to enter the port and make repairs. After the capture of dispatches reporting on the 10 enemy ships in the vicinity, with the ORP "Ryś" re-dipped and the commander ordered the submarine lay on the bottom at a depth of 37 metres near Jastarni. Leaking fuel, however caused, that the position of the submarine appeared German bombers and several times at her again attacked by depth charges. To further damaged, however, have not been realized and so is the submarine after nightfall emerged and around midnight out at the quay in the port of Hel.

5. September 1939 OPR "Ryś" on the orders of the commander of the fleet (but over the opposition of the commander of the Division) is established at the bottom of the helského the port to the hatch on the tower and the tower and the protruding cannon disguised sailors a variety of sails and branches to the submarine gave the impression of the wreck, which at that time was in the harbor a large amount. The crew abandoned the submarine and went ashore to rest, as has already begun to show signs of physical and psychological exhaustion. On the contrary, the ORP "Ryś" came the workers of the Port workshops (Portowe Warsztaty Remontove) and began with a tour of the damage. Found the particular leaks in the external fuel tanks. Because in helském port not to repair such damage to the equipment, the ORP "Ryś" sailed in the 22 h from the port to the open sea, and started depleting from the damaged tanks of the remaining 47 tons of fuel.

During the drawdown, 6. September 1939 in the 01:12, the patrol spotted an enemy ship and ORP "Ryś" is immediately plunged. It was necessary to wait until a German ship drifted away, then the submarine sailed to the surface and continued depletion of fuel. Then the ORP "Ryś" several times to purge the damaged tank and he sailed back to the port. Here he sat down on the bottom with open the valves to the fuel tanks and remained there until the evening. The submarine patrolled the ship of the Border guard "Bathory", which observed the level of, if there appear spots of fuel.

7. September 1939 left ORP "Ryś" Hel and set sail into a new sector, which was marked the limit of 018° and 019°W (west longitude), about 8 Nm northeast of Hel. Here according to the orders laid a minefield, however, was only 10 min, because he was distracted by enemy ships. Until the evening then stayed below the surface in the marked sector, and in the night without incidents to recharge the battery.

8. September 1939, during the attempt to lay the rest of the minefield, was the ORP "Ryś" attacked by German patrol boats, but he managed to escape.

9.September 1939 komandor podporucznik Grochowski decided to return to Hel. As soon as the submarine got into the harbor, the commander of the Grochowski received from the commander of the Submarine division, komandora porucznika Mohuczyho, categorical orders to leave with the ORP "Ryś" Puckou bay and head to their sector. Therefore, the ORP "Ryś" soon sailed again on the sea.

10. September 1939 before dawn, the submarine dived and headed north. During the voyage to mentally collapsed porucznik marynarki Tomasiewicz and shot a hole through his leg. Although převědčoval commander about the need to drop him back to Hel, ORP "Ryś" continued the voyage.

11. September 1939 radio operator ORP "Ryś" intercepted despatches intended for the submarine ORP "Wilk", the which sister ship, the order to try to break through the Danish straits to great Britain, or after running out of fuel leave the intern in the nearest neutral port.

ORP "Ryś" he continued in a voyage on the north and 12. September arrived to the Swedish island of Öland. The commander ordered to sail to the strait of Kalmarsund between the island and the mainland, because the sea was choppy, visibility is low, so the chance of sighting enemy ships minimum. That's why he wanted to put in the relatively calm waters of the straits of the possibility of the crew to get some rest.

The following day, 13. September 1939, left sub channel and continued to patrol the Ölandu, but due to the still unfavourable weather, rain and poor visibility didn't have much chance to catch a glimpse of. Komandor podporucznik Grochowski ordered then sail to the island of Gotland.

14. September 1939 was the ORP "Ryś" intercepted despatches, that the commander Grochowskému order to try to break with the submarine to the Uk or to intern in a neutral port. Because the condition of the fuel neumožńoval the voyage to England, komandor podporucznik Grochowski decided to patrol at sea for a period which the fuel will allow, and then let the intern in Sweden. At the same time, he asked the Headquarters of the flot about the possibility of attacking the lone German ship without warning. It was rejected and on the contrary came to specifying the order, allowing only attack on enemy ships in convoys or armed. This command of the commander of ORP "Ryś" roztrpčil, because in addition to the isolated German ships to any other saw and missed out on the opportunity to cause the enemy any damage.

15. September 1939 ORP "Ryś" moved into the area around the Swedish island Gotska Sandön and the following two days here patrol, however, again without success. The technical condition of the submarine is rapidly deteriorated, it didn't work the periscope and echosonda, again began to leak the fuel tank and the inside of the ship started to leak water. In the absence of the hydrophone was ORP "Ryś" practically deprived of the possibility to find the enemy.

17. September 1939 commander Grochowski decided to enter Swedish territorial waters and visit the nearest port, where he could refuel and make necessary repairs.

18. September 1939 in the 02:25 ORP "Ryś" the course was in sight of the lighthouse Almagrunden and changed course to the port of Sandhamn. To do so within the harbor to board the submarine boarded the pilot, about two hours later joined accompanying the Swedish torpedo boat and ORP "Ryś" continued the voyage to Stavsnäs. In this Swedish port was already another Polish submarine - ORP "Sęp", that after the internment odzbrojovali. In Stavsnäs asked komandor podporucznik Grochowski on the replenishment of stocks of fuel and repairs. It turns out, however, that the repair can not be done in time, after which the international convention authorize the stay of a foreign warship in the port. Thus fell the final decision on the internment ORP "Ryś". The same day, the ORP "Ryś" and ORP "Sęp" towed to the nearby port of Vaxholm, and anchored under the fortress on the rock.
19. September 1939 was the ORP "Ryś" disarmed by the radio station and the submarine was immobilized due to partial disassembly of the drive shaft.

21. September 1939, escape ORP "Orzeł" from Tallinn, the Swedish authorities issued a request to the Polish crew left the ship. Poles but lined up on the resistance, so eventually there was a compromise, when the submarine left the patrol and the rest of the officers and sailors stayed on shore.
To ORP "Sęp" and ORP "Ryś" was added later and the third Polish submarine ORP "Zbik", which has been interned a few days later.

In April 1940 were all three of the submarine towed to Stockholm, vyvázány at the Polish school ship "Dar Pomorza", fixed and marine equipment preserved. The exiled Polish navy at that time was trying to get the internees of the submarine back and carry them to Great Britain. The whole event had to drive from England seconded by komandor podporucznik Bogusław Krawczyk, the former commander of a submarine ORP "Wilk". But this plan did not, and when it was in April and may 1940 neighboring Norway occupied by the German army, Swedes in may, the negotiations ended and all the action stopped. Submarines, which at that time were re-equipped with torpedoes and guns, had to be again disarmed, and 10. June commanders they called off the red alert.
4. July 1940 were ORP "Ryś" and other submarines, towed to the island Högholm on lake Mälaren in Stockholm, and 18. July to the next island Fallskör. The crew had to abandon ship and stay on near the standing of the Swedish vessel "Johannes" and "will benefit from Sophia"
1. September 1940 has changed the structure of command interned submarines. Of all the crew members was created by one section, commanded by komandor podporucznik Salamon, the commander of the ORP "Sęp".
In October 1940 the submarines with crews moved to the town of Mariefred on the shores of lake Mälaren.

26. June 1941 Swedish sections cut off the Polish seafarers the way to the submarines and these were subsequently towed to Stockholm. During the September, however, were returned back to the Mariefredu.

In June 1942 and later in may 1944 was the ORP "Ryś" towed to Stockholm and carried out the necessary preservation work and repairs.

23. June 1945 came to Sweden, the Polish commission, whose task was to obtain the interned ships back to Poland. After the consent of the Swedish authorities, members of the commission examined the technical condition of the submarines and worked out the timetable for the necessary repairs. Have also initiated the agitation among the members of the crew, whose aim was to convince the sailors to return to their homeland. Commander of ORP "Ryś" was at that time, kapitan marynarki Bronisław Hackbeil.
5. September 1945 were all three submarines officially taken over from the Swedish authorities and 6. September on the ORP "Ryś" temporarily installed 50 batteries from the ORP "Sęp", to the submarine was able to own forces to sail to the fatherland. It was also all fueled up fuel on-loaded supplies and torpedoes. Because the commander refused to return to Poland, temporarily commander of the ORP "Ryś" became komandor porucznik Aleksander Mohuczy.
21. October 1945 on the ORP "Ryś and the remaining ships after years again vzyčili the Polish flag and the whole fleet accompanied by Swedish minesweepers sailed on the sea.
The steering angle Gdynia arrived ORP "Ryś", together with the other 25. October 1945, and the following day, 26. October is liberated in the military port of Oksywie. Here he took over temporarily the command of kapitan marynarki Kazimierz Kraszewski.
28. October 1945 were all returned to the ship officially welcomed representatives of the government and the army.
After performing the necessary repairs and putting the ship into working condition was the ORP "Ryś" 30. November 1945 re-absorbed into the Polish navy. The new commander was appointed captain marynarki Jozef Wierzchowski. 15. November was re-created Submarine division, which includes the ORP "Ryś" became.

26. march 1946 visited ORP "Ryś" Polish defense minister, marszałek Żymierski and in April 1946 deputy secretary of defense, generał broni Swierczewski.

6. may 1946 was the ORP "Ryś" towed to Stoczni Gdyńskiej in Gdynia to make the necessary repairs and remodeling. The submarine remained in the shipyard for more than 2 years, up to , November 1948. During the remodeling was, inter alia, removed the anti-aircraft gun and torpedo tubes adapted to the torpedoes of soviet design.

In , November 1948 was the ORP "Ryś" after the execution of re-entered service and all the rest of the year and during the whole of the following year 1949 on its board there was an intense exercise of the crew, the submarine often going out on a training and patrol cruises.

In the period from February June 1950 was the ORP "Ryś" again placed in the gdyńské yard and replaced the bearings of the main mechanisms.
After returning to the service in the July 1950 until the end of the year she spent submarine at sea only 8 hours, the rest of the time was these near the waterfront.

From January march 1951 on the deck of ORP "Ryś" again, intensely trained new sailors of submarines. Submarine commander was appointed captain marynarki Witold Urbański.
In July 1951 ORP "Ryś" during the exercise dipped to a depth of 70 meters, but the design depth of the dive was set only to 50 meters.
From 13. 20. October 1951 ORP "Ryś" with the sub ORP "Sęp" attended the first post-war visit to Riga.

In the course of the entire year a 1952 the crew of the ORP "Ryś" participated in combat exercises.

In September 1953 ORP "Ryś", the commission examined the Polish navy, which found that the hull is in very poor condition and the driving mechanisms considerably worn. Therefore, for the submarine commanded by the maximum immersion depth of 20 meters.

During the year 1954 served ODA "Ryś" primarily as a school ship.

10. January 1955 next the commission looked at the sub and decided on her slim combat value. ORP "Ryś" was included in the reserves and it was decided on his elimination. 8. September 1955 then on board the submarine launched a Polish flag and ORP "Ryś" has been removed from the state of the Polish navy.

During the year 1956 then the ORP "Ryś" gradually rozebráli and was crushed.
