PMP (ПМП)
PMP pontoon rigs were also involved in the fighting of the Iraq-Iran War in the 1980s, when they were used by both sides to bridge the Shatt al-Arab River, which forms the border between the two countries on its lower reaches (Basra province in Iraq, Khuzestan in Iran). While Iraq had been a regular client of Soviet arms factories since the late 1950s, Iran only turned its attention to Soviet military equipment in the mid-1960s. The Soviet equipment subsequently supplied to Iran was primarily intended to equip the ground forces and was characterized by a low degree of sophistication and a rather complementary importance for the Iranian army as a whole. The delivery of PMP kits was also in this spirit. The first seven pontoon carriers were delivered in October 1971.
Under Soviet licence, PMPs were also produced (under the designation PMS) in Czechoslovakia from the 1960s onwards. For transporting the pontoons, the T-138, T-813 and T-815 vehicles were gradually used.
