Mechanical deminerTRAL is designed for mine clearance and rapid terrain reconnaissance. It creates a 70 cm wide tracked passage in the minefield in front of each tank track on which it is mounted. Anti-tank mines with rod fuzes are fed to detonate in front of the full width of the tank. With good visibility in soft terrain, two mechanical deminers can be used - TRALs going in steps behind each other so that the tracks of the carriages overlap, thus creating a wider track passage.
The TRAL can only be attached to tanks that have welded on rails and brackets for attaching the demining equipment. The TRAL, by its weight and the resistance of the trolleys to rolling on the ground, impairs the tank's driving characteristics, its ground clearance and manoeuvrability. It is preferably used on roads, on hard and drivable terrain. In wet and poorly bearing soils, in deep snow and in icy conditions, its driving characteristics and reliability are reduced.
The TRAL mechanical deminer can withstand mine blasts and explosive charges up to 10 kg explosive weight. If they are stored normally, it reliably detonates them. Mines laid deeper or with a booby-trap cannot be defused by mechanical deminers.
