History
Fighting a thermonuclear warhead W89 was designed as a successor to the W69. Development and production have been entrusted with laboratory LLNL (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory). Part of the components for the production of warheads W89 should be used from outdated and phasing-out regions W68. However, projects of carriers were ruled out and the development of warheads was also canceled for reasons of geopolitical changes in September 1991 (the disintegration of the "eastern bloc", headed by With.With.With.R.).

Description
W89 should be a two-stage thermonuclear warhead 2. generation. W89 consists of less implosive (stěpné) warhead, which here functions as a fuse and is composed of high-explosives and fissile material (uranium or plutonium). This fuse when the explosion initiates hydrogen isotopes deuterium and tritium (the source of which is 95% lithium). To avoid premature start of the reaction in the beginning, is between splitting the charges and hydrogen isotopes uranium shield. On the contrary, a neutron reflector (beryllium) and the plutonium core in the center of the "fusion refills" (deuterium & tritium) to help broaden the response.
The weapon was designed to detonate on impact, even for an air burst.
Head W89 should be equipped with protizemní missile fired from the air AGM-131A SRAM II (Short Range Attack Missile 2) and also considered the location of the warheads W89 on the then newly designed anti-submarine missile fired from a ship or submarine RUM/UMM-125 Sea Lance.
