History of the Avro 504 Japan:
In 1921, the British commission brought 30 Avro 504 trainer aircraft, among other aircraft, to Japan. This type of aircraft was a very good export item and was exported to many countries. For the Japanese naval aviation it was a very welcome help. Twenty aircraft had wheeled landing gear and ten had float landing gear. The Naval Air Command decided to accept them into the armament and at the same time began negotiating the purchase of the rights for licensed production, several officers and designers went to England to get an idea of the production of the aircraft, Capt. Ryuzo Tanakami, Capt. Tomasu Koyama, Lt. Mitsuo Wada, Lt. Kishichi Umakoshi and Eng. Katsusuke Hashimoto, and upon their return, mass production began under their supervision at the Nakajima Hikoki K. K. and Aichi Denki K. K. We must remember that this was in fact the beginning of aircraft production in Japan. Production started in 1922 and by 1929 Nakajima produced 250 aircraft with both wheeled and float landing gear and Aichi added 30 float machines.
