AQM-34V "Firebee" (Teledyne Ryan Model 255) - unmanned electronic warfare vehicle
Its development began with the modification of the AQM-34G (codenamed "Combat Angle") unmanned aerial vehicle in 1968 to enable it to handle independent činť as a strike electronic warfare asset in činť operations against the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, as the manned aircraft performing these roles were taking too many casualties. In November 1968 (11/1968), the Air Force's bombing actions against the DPRK were halted, and none of the modified AQM-34G assets were deployed to perform a combat role. The unmanned aerial vehicle program designed to conduct electronic warfare strikes was resumed in 1974 when Teledyne Ryan was awarded a contract to modify the remaining AQM-34H and AQM-34J assets into an electronic warfare version designated the AQM-34V. Testing began in March 1976 (03/1976) and flight testing of the modified machines was conducted by the 6514th Test Squadron at Hill AFB from May 13, 1976 to October 1976 (10/1976), with C-130 aircraft serving as the vehicle. The electronic warfare equipment consisted of an AN/ALE-2 active jammer and a passive jammer (ALE-38 dipole strip ejector on a pair of hangers under the wing). A total of about 60 machines (47 converted from AQM-34H and AQM-34J, 17 machines were newly manufactured - serial čnumbers 74-2135/2150) were produced and delivered to the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center (WR-ALC) at Robins Air Force Base. This center stored and secured the činť of all unmanned aerial vehicles in the USAF arsenal. The AQM-34Vs were operationally deployed with the 11th Tactical Drone Squadron / 432nd Tactical Drone Group at Davis-Monthan AFB (in 1979, all AQM-34Vs were withdrawn from the unit and stored at the WR-ALC warehouses).
