CRDA (CANT) Z.1015

History:
The Cant Z.1015 was created on the drawing boards of chief engineer Fillipo Zappata at the Italian aircraft factory CRDA. In 1938, at the instigation of Regia Aeronautica, the designer F. Zappata decided to build a long-range mail aircraft, capable of being used as a medium-sized bomber, which would surpass mass-produced machines of competing brands in terms of speed and operational range. He was inspired by the design of an existing aircraft Cant Z.1007bis, which is slightly structurally edited. He reduced the wingspan, and mainly intended to place a new propulsion unit in the aircraft. An 18-cylinder Alfa-Romeo 135 RC.32 (Tornado) star engine with a power of 1,550 horsepower was planned. The prototype was completed on December 22, 1938 and first flown on January 20 in Monfalcone by test pilot Mario Stoppani. During test flights, the aircraft achieved good performance, at a speed of 500 km/h flew with a load of 2,000 kg of bombs to a distance of 2,000 km. In the same year, the aircraft was included in its condition Regia Aeronautica, and designated as Cant Z.1015B (Bellico), the serial number of the prototype was MM394. At the end of 1939, however, the development and flying of the aircraft stopped. After a short break, development slowly resumed, new aircraft were installed at the end of 1940, namely the Piaggio P.XII RC.45 with the power of one engine of 1,350 horsepower, as well as the new three-bladed adjustable propeller Piaggio-D´Ascanio. Between June 23 and July 3, 1942, the aircraft with these engines reached a speed of 563 km/h and flew to a distance of 2,930 km. During 1942, the aircraft performed only a few test flights, and was then transferred to the Nucleo Addestramento Aerosiluranti located in Gorica and led by Carlo Uni. There, the aircraft received a new serial number MM512 and was tested as a torpedo bomber. During the flight, the aircraft demonstrated good flight characteristics and the performance of the aircraft exceeded the performance of a mass-produced machine Savoia-Marchetti SM.79. The considerable complexity of production and especially the vulnerability of the aircraft against enemy fire led to the fact that the aircraft was never mass-produced.
The Cant Z.1015 was a three-engine low-flying mail aircraft. It had a retractable landing gear that retracted into the engine nacelles. The only prototype produced was not armed.
