History:
In 1942, the Japanese Naval Air Command (海軍航空本部 Kaigun Kōkū Hombu) drew up the technical specifications of the 17-Shi, articulating its requirements for a new heavy bomber for land bases. By this year, the company's design team 三菱重工業株式会社- Mitsubishi Jūkōgyō Kabushiki Kaisha was already working on its design G7M1, the latter being a response to the earlier 16-Shi specifications. The new specifications were submitted to another company 川西航空機株式会社 - Kawanishi Kōkūki Kabushiki Kaisha, this manufacturer had considerable experience in building large four-engined flying boats, and a new project with the factory designation K-100 will soon be built here. The designers designed the new heavy bomber as a twin-engined aircraft with a crew of four. The Navy gave the project the designation G9K1 17-Shi. The project was submitted to the technical department of the Kaigun Kōkū Hombu for review; this department took a close look at the project and subsequently stopped all further work on the project, criticizing the inadequate defensive armament (three 20 mm caliber guns) and the small payload capacity of the aircraft. The decision to cancel the development of the MK10B engine, which was planned to power the aircraft, certainly played a role in the halt of work.
After work on the project was halted, the 18-Shi specifications were compiled and released, resulting in the Nakajima G8N1 heavy bomber that finally met the Navy's expectations.
