AN/TPS-43

AN/TPS-43 - a lightweight, portable 3D radar designed for air reconnaissance for the benefit of air defence - whether provided by fighter aircraft or ground-based anti-aircraft units. The maximum range of the radar is 447 km (fighter-bomber type target). The height of the target is detected by comparing signal amplitudes in six channels. The radar is equipped with a wide range of anti-jamming protections.

Manufacturer.
Prototype manufactured: 1966
In service (USAF): since 1968

The radar's portability means that it can be rolled into two containers (pallets), each weighing 3,400 kg, and then transported by air. The first pallet (container) contains the operators' workstation itself with receiver and transmitter, the second houses the antenna and accessories. For road transport, the radar can be disassembled and transported by two M35 trucks. To reduce weight, the radar is constructed mostly from lightweight alloys and the electronic circuitry is implemented using microminiaturization, including the transmitter, which uses a twystron to modulate the beam.

Frequency: 2900 - 3100 MHz
Repeat frequency: 250 Hz
Pulse width: 6,5 microseconds
Beamwidth: 1,1°
Antenna rotation speed: 6 rpm
Max. 2.8 MW
Average power: 6,7 kW

During its production, the radar was modified several times to improve its parameters.
Versions:
AN/TPS-43A (antenna tilt, new self alien recognition system)
AN/TPS-43B (enlarged operator workstation, modification of the transmitter )
AN/TPS-43C/43CX (reliability increase, IFF modification)
AN/TPS-43D/43DX (added side-lobe suppression, increased range
AN/TPS-43E (major modification - improvement of electronics, mechanics and also the operators' cabin
AN/TPS-43F / Variants V1 - V6 (major modification - enlarged operator cabin, improved electronics, increased reliability)
AN/TPS-43G (increased power to 4 MW based on Pakistan's request)
AN/TPS-43M (improved electronics, increased dynamic range, merging of several modules into one unit as part of the IFF system)
AN/TPS-430
