Due to the success of the StuG III self-propelled guns against tanks, the Vomag was commissioned in 9/1942 to develop a design for a new self-propelled gun (Sturmgeschütz n.A.). The preliminary design envisaged the use of a standard Pz.Kpfw.IV platform with an armoured 7.5cm anti-tank gun. The superstructure was of extremely low design and the overall height of the vehicle was to be a maximum of 170 cm. The vehicle's low silhouette was intended to allow the vehicle to approach enemy armoured vehicles more stealthily, and would also provide better protection from being hit, as it would present a small and harder to hit target. A wooden mock-up of the superstructure with a mock-up of the gun was completed and presented to Adolf Hitler at a parade of the new weapons on 13 May 1943. Design work on the new assault gun continued, and the main change from the original design was the redesign of the hull's front sections. The original angular shapes of the hull front were not conducive to sufficient resistance to the new Soviet 85mm and British 17-pounder guns, despite the gradual increase in armour thickness up to 80mm. At the time, proposals were being made to modify the design of the Pz.Kpfw.IV, where the front of the tank was to be made from armour plates welded at sharp angles. Such was the design Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. H (Original 9./B.W.). As the difficulty of changes and production techniques would have affected the production of the much needed tanks, this plan was abandoned and both the Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.H type and the later Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.J version used the same hull shape as their predecessors. However, such a change could take advantage of a new project whose production was not yet underway, and so the designers modified the front end of the new self-propelled gun. They created a wedge shape made of armoured plates 50 mm thick (lower part) with 55° inclination and 60 mm (upper part) with 45° inclination. This gave the equivalent of 123mm and 110mm thick perpendicular armour plates respectively.

A full-size prototype made of unpanned steel was presented to Adolf Hitler at a conference on 20 October 1943. A pair of prototype machines had the corners of the front part of the superstructure rounded. This is their characteristic feature. The shape and dimensions of the roof section of the superstructure were of course different from later production vehicles. The first prototype (probably Fgst.Nr.V1) had a different shape of the gun shield, on which the hinged eye was welded. The armoured cover of the cannon's recoil gear also had two hinged lugs welded on. It also had a different shape of the muzzle brake. The second prototype Fgst.Nr.V2 had already a serial design of the gun shield and the muzzle brake. Later, an antimagnetic layer of zimmerit was applied to this prototype and it was included in the training unit (it bore the inscription "Schulungs-Fahrzeug" on the sides of the superstructure). This prototype, stripped of the recoil brake and the right machine gun cover over the driver's visor, was photographed for the D653/39 operations manual. The training unit also operated on French territory and therefore this machine has been preserved to this day in the French museum at Saumur, where it rested for many years in its depository. After restoration, it is now on full display at the German Tank Museum in Munster. Interestingly, even while standing in the depository, the prototype already had all-steel belt support pulleys on the right side of the chassis. On the left side it has pulleys with rubber hoops.

Description:
The Jagdpanzer IV uses the Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.F platform and its components without major modifications. The biggest modification is the fuel tanks, or rather their positioning in the vehicle. The 7.5cm Pak 39 L/48 gun is mounted 20cm to the right of the vehicle's centreline. The cannon is protected by a Topfblende cast shield. Secondary armament in the form of a MG 42 machine gun can be used in a pair of firing slits in the body's frontal armour located on either side of the gun. The slits are protected by hinged armour covers of a conical shape. In later production, the left slot above the driver's visor was eliminated. On the roof of the superstructure, to the right of the commander's hatch, was the firing port for the Nahverteidigungswaffe (a defensive weapon firing smoke and fragmentation shells). However, on several machines, mainly of earlier production, this port was covered by a cover.
In addition to the standard tank fighters, there was also a commander's version Befehls-leichte Panzerjäger IV. The vehicle received additional radio equipment (FuG 8) and had an additional star-tipped antenna (Sternantenne) mounted on the engine cowling behind the superstructure on the left.
An interesting experimental modification was made to the vehicle Fgst.Nr.320036 produced in 2/1944. The roof of the superstructure was made of wooden planks and on it, in addition to an experimental mock-up of the mounting of a remote-controlled machine gun (Rundumsfeuer M.G.), there was a mock-up of a revolving conning tower with seven observation periscopes and a hinged circular hatch, similar to that of a self-propelled gun StuG III Ausf.G. However, these modifications remained only in experimental form. Under the gunner's seat, an escape hole was created in the floor for the crew. This modification was put into production.

Production:
The bodies and superstructures were produced by Vítkovice Ironworks (code "bzs"). Vehicle assembly was handled by Vomag (code "ajk"). Vomag also produced tanks Pz.Kpfw.IV until 5/1944, when it gradually switched to tank fighters. The serial numbers Fgst.Nr. 320001-321000 were allocated for the production fighters.

1/1944
All Jagdpanzer IVs had a hole in the superstructure ceiling for the Nahverteidigungswaffe from the start of production. Due to the irregular supply of these weapons, some machines did not have this weapon and the hole was blinded with a protective cover.
2/1944
The
In an attempt to lighten the front of the machine, the position where the spare track links were placed was changed. Originally they were placed on the upper front hull armour, from this period onwards they were mounted on the rear upper hull section. This is where the mounts for the pair of spare running gear wheels were originally located. These were moved to the left side of the engine hatch.
3/1944
The
Because the left gunner's gun could not be used effectively, it was discontinued. The 60mm armor plates with the machine gun hole cut out were welded onto the supplied armor plates with 60mm armor plugs. On a few machines built in 3-4/1944, a remote-controlled armoured machine gun (Rundumsfeuer M.G.) was mounted on the roof of the superstructure in front of the loader hatch. This mounting was not extended due to insufficient internal space in the superstructure.
4/1944
The
Brake-gear cover received a modified shape. The lower corners were cut off. This was because this material overlapped the main front armour plate and achieved a weight saving on the already overloaded front of the machine. During the firing of 8.4.1944 it was found that there was no need for a stretch brake. Modifications were made to the braking gear. The hydraulic fluid volume (from 5 litres to 6 litres) and the diameter of the return rod (from 52mm to 60mm) were increased, and the hydraulic safety switch was eliminated. For fighters that were delivered with stretch brakes, these brakes were removed in field units.
5/1944
Starting with vehicle Fgst.Nr.320301, the fighters had 80mm thick frontal armour. The diameter of the machine gun's armour-piercing conical cover was increased.
6/1944
The
As a design simplification, the shape of the rectangular filler cap box on the engine cowling was changed. Originally the sides of this cover were sloping, now they were perpendicular. It was probably at this time that modified schürzen mounts began to be fitted, which were produced by a simplified technological process (bending). At the same time, the set of schürzen was also modified, with the front and rear schürzen being of a higher design.
9/1944
Due to reports of the zimmerit antimagnetic layer igniting after anti-armor missile hits, zimmerit ceased to be applied at the factory. Following complaints from crews about rainwater leaking into the interior, small "eyelets" began to be welded on the nose, sides and rear of the superstructure ceiling to hold the canvas.
10/1944
In an effort to save production time and reduce bearing consumption, the number of support pulleys was reduced from four to three

All in all, the result was a powerful tank fighter whose performance was further enhanced by the mounting of the 7.5cm PaK 42 L/70 gun on its immediate successor, the Panzer IV/70(V). The prototype Panzer IV/70(V) was a conversion of the Jagdpanzer IV L/48 serial number Fgst.Nr.230162 produced in 4/1944.

As for the designation of some sort of pre-production A-0 series, that's made up by I don't know who. It is generally believed that a trio of prototypes were created. Whether this is true is questionable.

Description of the photos:
1)Photographs document a demonstrator with a wooden superstructure on the chassis Pz.Kpfw. IV presented to Hitler on 14.5.1943. I don't count this in the prototypes. You can see from the photos that the demonstrator has undergone modifications.
By 2) logic it should be the first prototype of Fgst.Nr.V1 (?) (I suppose made of non-panned steel, armour plates welded without locking (analogy e.g. with Panther prototypes), hinge hooks in rounded corners, on the brake cover a pair of hinge lugs, on the shield of a different than later standard shape there is also a single hinge lug, without zimm).
3) There are photos of the prototype Fgst.Nr.??? from the presentation of the new combat equipment to Hitler on 20.10.1943 in Aris (without zimmu, with pistolport on the right side of the superstructure and small differences from the V2 - connecting plate of the rear side of the superstructure and the engine compartment cover, protrusion on the right side of the superstructure). My speculation is whether this happens to be a modified prototype, the hypothetical Fgst.Nr.V1, described above. A hint of the suspension hook on the rounded corner can be seen. I don't have the second available photo of this machine in electronic form, but it is in e.g. Panzer Tracts. Eventually it may be No.5 in this list.
4) Fgst.Nr.V2 from Munster (without pistolport on the right side of the superstructure with visible remains of zimmerit). That it is without the pistolport would evoke the claim that this is the last of the prototypes where this port has been eliminated. I have found references on the internet to this prototype being made of armoured steel, according to the Munster museum staff.
5) There is a weathered photograph of the prototype with rounded corners and a gunport on the starboard side of the superstructure with zimmerit and the inscription "Schulungs-Fahrzeug. It is a vehicle intended for WaPruf 6. The fact that it has frontal armour with locking removes the possibility that it is a hypothetical Fgst.Nr.1. It is thus a prototype of Fgst.Nr. V2.
6) Again, boiled down photos of the prototype from German regulation D 653/39. The vehicle has no cowl, machine gun cover over the driver removed. However, these are retouched photos of the Fgst.Nr. V2 prototype.

Jagdpanzer IV L/48 in the Syrian army
According to some sources, six Jagdpanzer IV tank destroyers were to serve in the Syrian army. A version with a cannon L/48 and L/70 is given. They were probably delivered from France.

Jagdpanzer IV in the Bulgarian Army

In order to replace the losses of Bulgarian armoured units during the battles against the German troops on the territory of Yugoslavia, Hungary and Austria, the Bulgarian Army received a total of four Jagdpanzer IV tank fighters during the final battles and after the end of the war. These were captured fighters of the 3rd Ukrainian Front.

Trophy tank numbers of Jagdpanzer IV (L/48) as of 11-12/1945:

Today located in the Museum of Military Glory in Yambol (Ямбол)

7)This serial number should belong to the Panzer IV/70(V) version. It may be interesting to see the serial numbers blending when moving from the L/48 gun version of the fighter to the Panzer IV/70(V) version with the long L/70 gun. It may as well be an error of notation in Bulgarian military or author's sources.

After the tanks were decommissioned, the Bulgarians used them in many cases for static defence of the border zones. One fighter of this type also survives in this condition. In this case it is an early production fighter, as it has two firing ports for the defensive machine gun and a recoil brake. After a large move of buried equipment, the machine has been reconstructed at the military base in Yambol and will probably end up either in a Bulgarian museum or, after an auction, in the hands of a private collector.
In addition to this short-gun version, the Bulgarians also had a pair of long-gun 75 mm versions (Panzer IV/70(A) and Panzer IV/70(V)) in their arsenal.
