General der Infanterie Hugo Meixner von Zweienstamm Infantry General Hugo Meixner von Zweienstamm
Hugo Meixner von Zweienstamm was born on February 1, 1858 in Lobzów near Kraków in the family of an officer. His twin brother Otto was born together with him. Both of them decided to pursue a career as professional officers and received a full military education. (By 1914, both had reached very high rank in the Austro-Hungarian army, each of them commanding an army corps). In November 1889 Hugo Meixner von Zweienstamm married and took as his wife Augusta, daughter of Major General Johann von Kubin. On the same day, his twin brother Otto married Margaretha, Augusta's sister. In December 1899 Hugo Meixner von Zweienstamm, with the rank of colonel, took command of the 28th Infantry Regiment in Prague. In October 1908 he became commander of the 27th Infantry Division in Košice and was subsequently promoted to lieutenant general. In February 1911 he took command of the 2nd Infantry Division in Jaroslaw, and in January 1914, with the rank of General of Infantry, he was given command of the 10th Army Corps in Przemysl.
After the outbreak of World War I, the Xth Army Corps was deployed as part of the First Army on the front in Halych against Russia. In January 1915, he went on medical leave, and Lieutenant General Josef Krautwald von Annau temporarily took command of the Xth Army Corps during his absence. The corps headquarters was then located in Medzilaborce on the Carpathian front. He returned from medical leave in March 1915, when the corps headquarters was already in Humenne. However, he remained at his post for only a very short time and continuing health problems caused his final departure from the front in April 1915. He handed over command of the X Army Corps to Lieutenant General Hugo Martiny von Malastow. Infantry General Hugo Meixner von Zweienstamm retired from active service and held no further command or staff positions until the end of World War I. He died in July 1951 and is buried in Vienna.
