DIM (Дорожный индукционный миноискатель ДИМ) - road induction minehunter designed for searching anti-tank and anti-personnel mines with metal body (metal parts) laid on (under) roads, runways and airport stands and in fords up to a depth of 70 cm.
The kit was part of a unit forming the forward march screen of the march stream of the motor artillery/tank divisions.
The kit is mounted on a modified UAZ-469 chassis (initially on a GAZ-69) and consists of a retrieval section, mounted on a tilt frame, an electrical power system and an alignment device.
The device is capable of detecting a mine type TM-62M (ТМ-62М)to a depth of 25 cm. The device is capable of detecting mines in a 2.2 m wide strip and at a maximum speed of 10 km/h. The vehicle is manned by two persons - a driver and an operator. During the work the vehicle is supplemented by a quartet of pyrotechnicians with mine detectors IMP, or UMIV, RVM, RVM-2 (ИМП (УМИВ, РВМ, РВМММ-2), detonators and other pyrotechnical equipment for the destruction of mines found.
In the marching position the search section is raised upwards, above the front of the vehicle, in the combat position it is lowered in front of the vehicle. The vehicles are specially modified - elements are added to the hydraulic circuit of the braking system that allow automatic stopping of the vehicle in case of a signal from the search section, a compressor is connected to the transmission system. In the rear part of the vehicle there are two tanks with the demarcation fluid and nozzles that demarcate the tested section of the road.
Description of operation:
As the equipment is transferred to the combat position, power is turned on, and the equipment is checked, the operator turns on the retrieval device and instructs the driver to drive slowly forward. The operator turns on the solenoid valves of the bright yellow tracer fluid tanks, which mark the verified section of road behind the vehicle, and uses the control device to ensure that the tracer is correctly positioned on the road.
In the event of a mine being detected, the auomatics automatically locks the vehicle's brakes and the vehicle remains stationary. Then the towed bomb disposal technicians with their equipment take up their work and the operator unlocks the brakes of the car. The driver and the car drive off to a safe distance. Once the mine has been cleared, the bomb disposal technicians mount up and the vehicle continues to check the road.
The DIM (ДИМ) vehicles were in the armament of the engineer company of the engineer battalion of the motorized artillery and tank divisions of the Soviet Army. Each company had three vehicles in its armament. The vehicles had neither integrated armament nor special armour.
