KV-5 (Object 225)

The director of the Kirov plant, Comrade Zaltsman, was ordered to construct and make a prototype of the KV-5 by 10.11.1941. In the development of the machine they were to cooperate with the Izhora plant.

Specifications:
nose armour - 170 mm
side armouring - 150 mm
turret armouring - 170 mm
armament - 107 mm ZIS-6 gun
max.width - 4200 mm
propulsion - 2x V-2 (1200k)

In 6/1941 the development of this new super heavy tank was started. Several well-known engineers participated in its development (N.Cejc, K.Kuzmin, L.Sychev, N.Fedorchuk). The project was based on the knowledge gained during the design of the KV-4 version. The machine was based on the classic KV tank concept, but the platform was extended by 2 running wheels (8 in total). They created a chassis that featured a small height (920 mm). The driver and the radio operator/machine gunner sat at the front of the hull in small turrets. Behind them was a large turret in which the 107 mm ZIS-6 cannon was to be mounted. Thanks to the large bearing orbit (1840 mm), it was possible to create a sufficiently spacious turret in which the crew was to have enough room for their work. The machine was to be characterized by extremely thick armour, which reached maximum values of 150-180 mm (!). Two V-2 engines with a total power of 1200 hp were to provide propulsion for this monster, the weight of which was to be around 100 tons. By 8/1941 the design work was practically completed and the production of the individual components of the prototype was to begin. It is possible that this was done, but due to the disastrous situation on the fronts, all such fantastic projects were forbidden and all production resources were to be concentrated on the production of classic tanks KV. So this interesting machine remained only in the form of drawings.
