Pilot Officer Jacques Arthur Laurent Philippart

RAF No.81628

Born 11. january 1909 in Mont-St-Guilbert. He graduated from the pilot school of the Belgian Air Force on 30.11.1931. Over the years he became a well-known pilot and instructor in Belgium.

In 1938-39 he participated in the reorganization of the Belgian flight schools and therefore resided in England. In 1939-40 he was an instructor at a flight school in Antwerp. The German attack on 10 May 1940 found him in Evre, from where he evacuated to France. Here he was assigned to the Belgian Air Force staff as a liaison officer, providing a link between it and England. He finally left France on 24 June.

In England he joined the RAF and on 7 July he started with 7. OTU retraining on Hurricanes, which he had flown in Belgium. Therefore, the retraining was quick and on the 15th he was sent to the 213th Squadron. With it, he intervened in the Battle of Britain, winning 6-1-0 in 14 days and becoming the first Belgian fighter ace of World War II.

His first victory came on 11 August, when he shot down one Ju 88 at Portland Bill. He captured his greatest success four days later when he shot down three fighter Bf 110 over the same area, and probably another, in all his unit claimed 19 certain victories in one loss.

Philipart extended his score again on the twenty-second when he shot down another Ju 88. The Belgian fighter fought his last battle on 25 August. He did manage to shoot down one of the 100th fighter during a battle with a formation of Ju 88s covering a fighter Bf 109, which took place near Portland, However, bullets fired by the pilot of another, presumably from JG 53, found his Hurricane V7226, which became uncontrollable. Although Philippart left it on a parachute, he did not survive the jump because the wind blew it over the sea. His body was washed up after three days and was taken to Belgium after the war.
