The Wahrendorf system, an iron cannon with a rifled breech-loading barrel, was introduced to the Austrian army in the following year. The breech was piston-operated and secured by a transverse cylindrical pin. The breech was sealed with a cardboard gasket that had to be changed after each shot, which reduced the cadence to about 2 shots per minute. This was a little less than the smoothbore foreguns. The second disadvantage - their considerable weight - predisposed them to service in the navy and in forts.
