Iraq Navy
Birth: 02.07.1937, when the first 4 vessels were commissioned at Basra port.
The development of the Navy was in three phases - the first phase took place between 1937-1958 and involved the creation of a strong riverine fleet. In 1941, the foundation of the Iraqi Navy was the River Flotilla (River Flotilla Iraq Navy). This flotilla was made up of four Thornycraft gunboats with a displacement of 100 tons and an armament consisting of a 3.7" howitzer, a 3" mortar and four machine guns. Its gradual construction continued after the end of the war.
The second phase of construction was started with the coup d'état in the country on 14 July 1958, and was implemented in the early 1960s. Its aim was to build a force capable of submarine warfare in the waters of the Persian Gulf and focused on torpedo boats and ships.
The third phase kicked off with the July Revolution of 1968 (17-30.07.1968). The aim of the construction was to build a fleet that would be able to protect Iraqi naval installations and vessels in the Persian Gulf from attack.
