The decision to create a new design Ausf.G was made at a meeting in the company M.A.N. on 4.5.1943. The program Panther II was not approved for series production and production was to continue Panther I. Version Ausf.G, however, was based on the design of the hull Panther II. The inclinations of the armored parts of the hull have changed. The inclination of the sides of the Ausf.G version has changed to 29 ° (for the versions Ausf.D/ Ausf.A was a slope of 40 °). Reducing the slope of the side armor led to poorer ballistic protection, so the thickness was increased to 50 mm (previously 40 mm). This increase added 305 kg to the total weight of the tank. This undesirable weight gain of the tank was reduced by further modifications. The thickness of the lower front armor was reduced from 60 mm to 50 mm (weight savings were 150 kg). The thickness of the front part of the bottom was reduced from 30 mm to 25 mm (weight savings were 100 kg). In total, the weight should have increased by only 55 kg. Without the stated increase in weight, the thickness of the front ceiling of the body was increased from the original 16 mm to 16-40 mm. However, the designers redesigned some parts of the hull (slopes and shrinkages) and achieved zero weight gain.
The tower was unchanged from the previous version Panther Ausf.A. The hull has been significantly modified.

Changes introduced by Pz.Kpfw.V Ausf.G:

- a new type of driver and radio operator hatches
- installation of a new rotating driver observation periscope
- the opening in Kugelblend was given a stepped shape, which helped to ballistic protection of this part
- the blinds on the engine cover, the air intake covers for the carburettor, the fuel tank cap, the exhausts, the brakes, the ventilation system were reconstructed (there is no need for an additional pair of exhausts on the left exhaust)
- The stockpile of ammunition increased to 82 rounds
- Command tanks had a reduced supply of ammunition to 64 rounds and received an additional electric generator GG 400 to power an additional radio station
- tools for maintenance and rescue mounted on the sides of the body were revised (a wooden pad placed under the jack was added, the thickness (32 mm) and length (8.2 m) of the rescue rope were increased)
- Schürzens were mounted on an extended fender mounted almost the entire length of the sides of the body
- the shock absorbers have been relocated and modified

The transition of production from the Ausf.A version to Ausf.G took about two months, the first company to start producing the Ausf.G version was the company MAN (4/1944). The long-term production plan from October 26, 1944 determined the monthly delivery plan until 5/1945, when the last Panther Ausf.G was to be produced, followed by production of the type Panther Ausf.F with tower Schmalturm. However, due to the Allied bombing, the original supplies and plans to start producing a version of Ausf.F lagged far behind. The production of the version Ausf.G thus continued until the end of the war.

Modifications introduced during production:

In 5/1944, the cast armor exhaust cover was replaced by a welded cover.
In 6/1944, sheet metal exhaust covers were introduced to hide hot pipes at night, when it was a significant unmasking element.
In 6/1944, the installation of three brackets for a 2-ton crane designed for tank repairs was introduced on the tower ceiling. During this period, the bracket began to weld to the rear hatch of the tower.
In 7/1944 began to install a modified clip for holding observation periscopes in the command tower. They were released while driving.
On July 17, 1944, the cancellation of the installation of the air intake in the front part of the body ceiling was revised. Reassembly is already known at the production of July 22, 1944 ( M.N.H.).
July 18, 1944 it was ordered to cancel the installation of a holder for the observation periscope ( T.S.R.1) in the command tower. On the same day, the installation of a rain cover above the conductor observation periscope was ordered. The assembly was introduced in 8/1944, but this cover limited the view and later manufactured tanks are known that do not have these covers. It is not known to me whether the units were canceled or dismantled.
In 8/1944, modified hatches for the driver and radio operator began to be fitted. In certain rotations of the tower, they were blocked and in the case of forced leaving of the machine, it was not possible to open them. After modification, these hatches were easily discarded and cleared escape routes for the crew. During this period, the protective cover of the area above the cannon shield began to be installed. The sheet metal welded in the front part of the tower ceiling had the task of protecting this space from the intrusion of various materials, for example in the event of a nearby grenade explosion (stones, soil, wood, etc.).
In accordance with the order dated 19.8.1944, all manufactured tanks were to be painted with a primer camouflage paint Dunkelgelb RAL 7028. Additional camouflage colors Olivegrün RAL 6003 and Rotbraun RAL 8017 were to be applied directly by combat units according to their own needs.
August 25, 1944 issued a regulation with immediate effect prohibiting painting the interior in multiple colors.
On September 7, 1944, the application of the antimagnetic layer Zimmerit was canceled.
In mid-9/1944, the abolition of the basic camouflage paint Dunkelgelb RAL 7028 was ordered. Instead, the machines had to leave the production line only in the basic red paint. This regulation supplemented another of October 31, 1944, when it was ordered to stop interior painting.
In 9/1944, an enlarged protective roof from the rain began to weld over the hole for the optical sight on the cannon shield. At the same time began the installation of a modified cannon shield with a "chin", which was to prevent the rebound of missiles into the space between the tower and the hull ceiling. However, this new type of shield was not completely replaced in production by the old type, and tanks were produced with both types of shields until the end of the war. During this period, the company M.A.N. produced a limited series of tanks with all-steel wheels (with internal rubber suspension). The same wheels were used in later production Tiger I (mounted by Fgst.Nr.250822) and on the tank Tiger II. Tanks Fgst.Nr. 121032-121055. These wheels with a diameter of 800 mm were also mounted on several tanks manufactured by the company M.A.N. in 3-4/1945. In this case, they were mounted only in the last rear position. In order to improve the cooling of the engine compartment, a modified fan with reinforced blades was installed during this period. Such a fan was marked with a red cross on the fan covers.
In 9-10/1944, modified gearboxes began to be installed. The original ones were often destroyed.
In 10/1944, modified self-cleaning tensioning wheels with a diameter of 650 mm began to be fitted. The original smaller tension wheels had problems with mud and snow. During the same period, flame arresters began to be fitted at the ends of the exhausts to prevent the tanks from being unmasked at night. The first tank manufactured by M.N.H. was Fgst.Nr.128875(8.12.1944). Another 40 pieces of curved exhausts intended for the installation of flame arresters were mounted on 20 tanks of the company M.N.H. serial numbers Fgst.Nr. 128997-129016 (produced in the period 25.1.1945 - 1.2.1945). Subsequently, they were to be retrofitted with already manufactured tanks.
In 10/1944 began to install a new system of heating the crew compartment in the winter. A characteristic feature of this system is the raised fan cover on the left side. The original fan blowing warm air from the radiator then returned through the ducts in this cover to the distribution network to the crew compartment and to the batteries.22.11.1944 was on the tank Fgst.Nr.128827 ( MNH) first mounted armor a cover above this raised fan cover to regulate the flow of exhaust air. This made it possible to regulate the heating temperature.
In 10/1944, the installation of covers regulating the air flow above the rectangular fans (exhaust blinds) on the right side was started.
November 7, 1944 it was ordered to stop mounting the rear shock absorber. Driving characteristics with and without a shock absorber were not too different, so as part of the savings, this component was omitted. During this period, the installation of a modified, driver-friendly driver's seat began. After the cancellation of the front window in the front of the hull, the control was problematic with the hatch open. However, raising the seat gave a worse view of the control devices (tachometer, oil temperature indicators, etc.). At the same time, indirect lighting blinded the driver while moving in the dark. For this reason, the instrument panel was modified in parallel and adjustable lighting was addressed. Accessories for protecting the crew against annoying combat gases have undergone further improvements. They concerned boxes for five filters for gas masks, holders for two breathing tubes. Three mounts for detection panels signaling the use of annoying gases were installed on the ceiling of the tower. There was a metal box in the tower with a supply of detection panels (they probably worked on the principle of some chemical reaction - the principle is not clear to me). On December 19, 1944, the delivery of the first filtration system was reported, which was to ensure the supply of air free of annoying gases to the crew compartment. If I understood correctly, it was supposed to be about cleaning the air through a carbon filter (a similar principle as solved by today's kitchen hoods ???).
In 11/1944 there was an effort to introduce wipers on the optical sights of the cannon.
In 12/1944 a new basic camouflage paint was introduced Dunkelgrün RAL 6003, additional camouflage paints were Rotbraun RAL 8017 and [ia] RAL 7028.
January 24, 1945 was ordered to stop the assembly of the impeller for the anti-aircraft machine gun mounted on the command tower. It was to be replaced by a simpler system. This regulation was probably not applied until 3/1945, when new machine gun holders were to be delivered. There are known photos of tanks that did not have this circle. I don't know their replacement.
On January 20, 1945, the number of screws securing the rear engine cover was reduced. After the new one, only half of the screws were used (18).
On January 24, 1945, the charger seat was abolished as part of savings and simplification of construction.
On February 15, 1945, the interior of the tower was re-painted with ivory.
In 3/1945, the installation of five rings on each side of the tower was introduced, which were to be used to attach camouflage aids (nets, wires to which vegetation could be attached, etc.).
Tanks manufactured in the factory M.A.N. in the period 3-4/1945 had an all-steel wheel in the last position of the chassis. Whether it was an attempt to save strategic rubber raw material or an attempt to solve the failure rate of a classic wheel with a rubber rim is not known. Personally, I prefer the second option.

A special modification of combat units was in 12/1944 the creation of protective covers for ventilation outlets in the engine compartment from air attacks and falling material from explosions around the tank. Covers made of Schürzen parts were mounted on the supports.
Unauthorized modifications to combat units included the installation of suspension hooks on the sides of the tower, which hung the belt links (this increased passive protection). A similar modification was the hanging of spare wheels on the tower and the sides of the hull. Another unapproved modification was the transfer of the container with the folding bar for cleaning, mainly from the left side to the rear of the engine cover.

Or like this. Three pictures of destroyed panthers from the Vyškov region in 1945. The overturned tank is one and the same machine. There are more images for it.
There is a similar picture in T. Jakak's book May 1945. It depicts a pair of G panthers in similar camouflage as in the first image.

Pz.Kpfw. V Ausf.G als Ersatz M 10 (úprava pre oklamanie nepriateľa)

Pre pripravovanú ofenzívu v Ardenách koncom roka 1944 bolo pre 150. Panzer Brigade upravených päť Pantherov Ausf. G do podoby amerických stíhačov tankov M 10. Jednotka mala v rámci operácie "GREIF" vyvolať v radoch amerických jednotiek chaos. Mala mať americkú výstroj a výzbroj.

4. Tento stroj Oberfeldwebela Backmana z Pz.Komp. Drier-Kampfgruppe Z niesol označenie "B-7" a falošné kódové označenie 10. tank Battalion 5. Armored Division. Stroj bol zničený bazookou Lt. Snyderom v Malmedách (US 120.Inf.Reg.).

Pz.Kpfw. In Ausf. G Panther ("red R01"), Bovington Tank Museum, 2003 a 2008. The tank has been in the museum's collections since 1952. It originally bore tower number 331, which was later changed to the current R01, which would indicate that it is the machine of the regiment commander. However, there is no evidence that this vehicle actually serves as Panzerbefehlswagen and it is very unlikely that it would ever be converted to this version.

German PzKpfw V Panther in the service of the british troops 4th Coldstream Guards from assembly the 6th Guards Tank Brigade, 29. November 1944

The Tank was found on the farm during the fighting around the village of Overloon in the Netherlands. In the framework of the German army belonged to the tank 2. the Panzer Brigade 107. The british put it to 4. battalion Coldstream Guards, apparently to command a platoon, to your tanks the type of Churchill. All the tanks had the "bird" nicknames, e.g. "eagle", "vulture", etc., so Panther got the nickname "cuckoo" - "the cuckoo". Tank got a new coat of paint, probably in the color khaki as the other tanks of the unit. The new owners were satisfied, in particular for the characteristics of the optical reticle, which the German tanks excelled.

The cuckoo has joined the attack on the castle Geijsteren i operation a blackcock in January 1945. This operation was to dislodge the Germans from the area between the Dutch cities of Roermond, Heinsburg and Sittard. The cuckoo was deployed to attack to the city Waldenrath in the south-east the peak of this triangle. The winter was rough and Cuckoo at the same time excited and upset their new owners - there, where the british tanks had problems on the icy roads, there the Panther continued without major problems.

Further deployment of the Cuckoo has been in the operation Veritable, cleansing between the between the rivers Rúr and the Rhine in Germany. Hard fighting awaited the british troops, in particular in the field of Reichswaldského forest, unsuitable terrain for the tank unit. Even here, however, the Panther joined in the fighting, before his failed fuel pump, that wasn't how to replace or fix, and so the Coldstream Guards had to Panther to leave to their fate and continue on your Churchillech.
