The first experience with LVT(A)-1 showed the need for heavier armament, the 37 mm gun was not enough for the Japanese bunkers. As a solution it was decided to equip the vehicle with a turret from a M8 75 mm calibre self-propelled howitzer. This modification required modifying the superstructure behind the cab and eliminating the mounts for the 2 7.62 mm machine guns. To compensate, a ring for a 12.7 mm machine gun was added to the rear end of the turret.

During the fighting in the Marianas, the shortcomings of this arrangement became apparent - the machine gunner was very vulnerable in an uncrouched position, and the open turret ceiling did not protect against Japanese mortar shelling and grenades during ambushes and ambushes. As a result, it was decided to modify the LVT(A)-4: the machine gun was removed and the turret received two mounts for 7.62 machine guns on the sides, fitted with shields + a third machine gun was mounted in the radio operator's cabin. The vehicles thus modified were known as the "Marian model".

During 1944, 1,489 units were produced and another 401 units were produced in 1945 before switching to the LVT(A)-5 type. 533 units were taken over by the USMC and armed 3 battalions, 1,307 units were taken over by the US Army and formed 7 battalions. 50 units were delivered to the Allies.
