Rotnik Jozef Drlička

Jozef Drlička was born in Piešt'any. He passed the pilot training course "1000 new pilots". He joined the army in 1937, completed another pilot training course in Spišská Nová Ves with Aeronautical Regiment 3 "General-Aircraftman M.R.Štefánik". He attended the training of pilots of two-seater aircraft in Piešt'any (he graduated in August 1938). After its completion he was assigned to the observation flight 12, armed with Š-328 aircraft. It belonged to the Aeroplane Squadron II/3, Aeroplane Regiment 3 in Spišská Nová Ves (SNV).

It saw its first combat deployment on 24 March 1939, when Hungarian troops invaded Slovakia. On that day at noon, he took off from SNV under the command of Lance Corporal Mac, to bombard Hungarian troops as they advanced on Michalovce. While returning from action, he had to make an emergency landing near Strážské due to an engine failure of his Š-328. He was decorated for his participation in the defence of Slovakia on 5 March 1940.

Due to an acute shortage of pilots in the newly established Slovak Air Force, it was decided that selected observation pilots would be retrained as fighter pilots. Drlička was also enrolled in the course in August 1940 and completed it on 31.01.1941 with a very good grade. Subsequently, he was assigned to fighter flight 12, which was deployed to fight against USSR from 07.07.1941 under the codename "Milota". There it carried out protection of Slovak ground troops and cooperated with a German reconnaissance squadron. She was also deployed in battle assaults. During one such attack on 30 July 1941, Jozef Drlička distinguished himself by rescuing pilot Martin Danihel. He had to make an emergency landing in enemy territory. Drlička and Kubovič landed next to him (with air support from the other pilots), and Kubovič took off in the wake with Danihel standing on the wing of his Avie. For his rescue of Danihel, Jozef Drlička was awarded the German Eiserne Kreuz II.Kl. and later I.Kl.

On September 4, 1941, he managed to shoot down one I-16 fighter in the Garnostajpol area. In October he was promoted to sergeant. Squadron 12 returned to Slovakia on October 17, 1941. In February, Drlička was selected to a group of pilots and ground personnel who participated in the retraining for Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter planes at the Danish Grove. He was assigned to Fighter Squadron 13 under the command of Ondrej Ďumbalu. The latter began moving from Piešt'any to Majkop in the USSR on 27 October 1942. Ground personnel were moved by train, flying personnel flew on seven Bf 109 E. Jeen also piloted the Drlichka. During a stopover at Kamenica nad Cirochou, Drlička had to make an emergency landing "on the belly" of the aircraft. Another malfunction that befell him was an engine failure, consequently he had to make an emergency landing at the base Umaň. He did not rejoin the unit until mid-December 1942.

On January 2, 1943, Drlička was to fly with Cpl. Kovárikom on a combat flight - escorting a German reconnaissance aircraft Fw 189. However, in the Tuapse area they were attacked by Russian fighter LaGG-3. Kovárik landed in Krasnodar, but Jozef Drlička was shot down by the fighters. He thus became the first combat casualty of the 1st Guards Flight 13.
