LPWS (Land-based Phalanx System) is a means of Very Short-range Air Defense (VSHORAD) and was developed based on the requirements of US forces deployed in Iraq after 2003, as the existing means in armaments were not able to act against mortar and rocket raids by local insurgent and other armed groups. The development was carried out relatively quickly (initial operational capability was achieved in 2005), as a system capable of destroying these funds was introduced in the navy as Mk-15 Phalanx. For the needs of the ground forces, the Block 1B version was selected and the entire system was modified so that it could be placed on the loading area of a low-load commercial semi-trailer with a load capacity of 35,000 kg. LPWS firefighting is a key component of the Centurion C-RAM .

LPWS (Land-Based Phalanx Weapon System)

This is the land version of the Phalanx, coming out of the naval version of the Block 1B. This version is intended for defense against rocket and artillery attacks. The so-called concept of C-RAM (Counter-Rocket, Artillery and Mortar). Alternatively, you can use against a fast moving suicide vehicles. System Phalanx Block B1, is reconfigured for ground use and is established on the low position of the trailer along with the generator, source, cooling, and closed the station operator. For new purposes has been adjusted and munitions, when it is používáná self-destruct ammunition M-246 or the improved M-940. The new ammo is used, to reduce the possibility of collateral damage from the ricochet, etc. Fragments of the new shots are not so dangerous in rebounding as the original shots.

The first tests were started in late 2004 in a test area of Yuma, Arizona. The system showed a high success rate against minometným bullets caliber 60mm, 81mm and 120mm and 90mm, and 122mm rockets.

LPWS.

System Phalanx Block 1B is currently probably the most elaborate and the most effective hlavňovým running for the role of C-RAM, despite the fact that it uses one of the least powerful calibers - 20x102.
The original canons of the Vulcan M61A1 were carefully analyzed and redesigned for mimimalizaci variance. In this process were mainly the length of 1524 mm zaměneny longer ( 2006 mm) with twice the weight added to the load-bearing frame and the bearing for supporting the block main in the middle, and significantly reworked the leadership of the mouth of the main. All this modifications were made for the apcr ammo M149 used For.With.Navy.
This excellent ammunition for ground deployment uncomfortably large endangered spaces (over 15 km), therefore it was necessary to return to the ammunition M 940 ( for PIVADS from the 80's.years old), equipped with a pyrotechnic self-destruct device. Due to the fact that at some fire stations is necessary to provide a mask of certainty, it was necessary in these cases even use older ammo M246 with a mechanical lighter M505A3 (structure 60. years - for VADS), which of these properties it has.

Due to an external pohohu can PMS cadence guided by the needs of up to 6000 r/min, when the length of the dose to the 200 shots, for maintaining a high service life the main are but used less benefits and lower cadence.

Quite a crucial element for the role of the C-RAM is the use of dlouhoohniskové the thermal imager, which can determine the angular coordinates of the malorozměrných targets significantly more accurately than radar. In the first version of the Phalanx (CIWS) was a thermal imager only as an optional accessory, in the latest versions of the radar detector is only used for the initial capture of the target and guiding a thermal imager, then it is used for measuring the actual speed of the missile and the target.
Because the PMS must respond to threats automatically, the operator is the element that the target capture and shooting potvzuje, unlike the practice of troop air defense of the last century, when the selection of and allocation of goals were conducted by the battery commander or firing of the device.
