Praga V3S - version overview

In 1953, the serial production of the three-axle Praga V3S was launched, which found application in both the military and civilian sectors. During the sixty years of its service, a plethora of variants of its use were created.
After its entry into service, it was used in the CSLA to transport all kinds of material, sometimes literally impossible. After the formation of the Warsaw Pact, it was necessary to transport every conceivable logistic support (in today's terminology) to the battlefield of the Czechoslovak front as part of the upcoming war operations. For this purpose, among other trucks, the Praga V3S was to serve and did serve.
Already during the production of the Praga V3S, work was underway to replace it with a completely new type of medium truck. The first to be built was the Avia S-430 from 1965, and from 1982 the STNA/STA (medium truck/medium off-road truck) study - later the TNS-666 Děvín. After the division of Czechoslovakia, both successor armies continued to look for a replacement for the Praga V3S. The AČR found it in the form of ROSS R210.12 VV 6x6 medium truck Tatra 810, while the ASR found it in the form of medium truck AKTIS 4x4.1R.

For a better understanding of the different versions, the chassis (frame, axles, engine, gearboxes and driver's cab) and the body itself need to be separated. Several variants of the chassis section were produced during series production.

Production variants - produced by the manufacturer:

Praga V3S - in production 1953 - 1983
Praga V3S M1 - in production 1983 - 1987
Praga V3S M2 - in production 1984 - 1990

In addition, there were also so-called non-production upgrades:

Praga V3S M6 - with Daewoo Avia engines, manufacturer VOP 081 Přelouč
P-V3S M6T (P-V3S M8) - with Daewoo Avia engines and cabin, manufacturer VOP 081 Přelouč
Praga V3S VM (unofficial designation) - with Detroit Diesel engines, manufacturer AOV Benešov
The mentioned non-production upgrades did not make it into the armament of the Czech Armed Forces. Probably the only exception is the photographically documented Praga V3S M6 with SKS body, but it was probably only a prototype intended for military use.

Military versions

The 1982 MNO Aut 24-12 regulation "Treatment of the Praga V3S off-road truck and its modifications" distinguished the following production modifications built on the basic Praga V3S machine base:
the flatbed truck (V)
a flatbed car with winch (VN)
a tipper truck with ZČ 500 ()
flatbed truck with HR 1001/HP 1002 (HR)
tipper car with rear tipping (S1)
three-way tipping car (S3)
a box car with no difference in use and interior equipment (SK)
tanker truck for 3000 LPH with or without dispensing arm (CPH)
chemical spray truck ARS 12M/ARS 12DC (ARS)
armoured car with 30 mm PLDvK vz. 53/59M (P)

For the treatment of other superstructures not listed in regulation Aut-24-12, the Operator's Manual or the manual issued by the superstructure manufacturer applied to the treatment of the superstructure.
It is likely that, in the case of the older regulations for the Treatment of the Praga V3S off-road truck and its modifications, there may have been other designations for the relevant modifications.
The following summary of Praga V3S versions also captures versions where the Praga V3S was used only as a transport vehicle for armament or equipment.
It is by no means exhaustive or complete. Also, the designation of the superstructures may be inaccurate or duplicated, resulting in the use of a codename during the development of the version in question, which then received a different designation when it entered armament. In some cases, the superstructure is part of a kit or kits of a higher type (e.g., POB, PVD is part of PAD-3 and PAD-4).

Prags V3S with a flatbed body have been produced in at least four types over the years (V, VN, HR, ZČ), not including various modifications for transporting armament and equipment.
Even the Praga V3S SK boxcars did not have a unified body type.
At least the following cabinet designs are known:
SK - without pressurization, solid fuel stove
SK DAM- without air-tightness (?), solid fuel stove, with FVAP 15/24 filter-ventilation device (e.g. mobile field map dispenser)
SK - without pressurisation, diesel heater 6 BON 3
SKSK - without pressurisation (?), diesel heater 6 BON 3, with FVAP 15/24 filtration system
SK foldable both sides - without pressurisation, both side walls can be pulled out to extend the cabinet area (e.g. POROST )
SK folding left side - without sealing, the left side wall can be pulled out to extend the cabinet area, combining these two cabinets will create a larger workstation (e.g. CENTRUM F)
SKM - with pressurized cabinet body with FVZ-180 filter ventilation system and X7-S1 diesel heater
SKS - medium box body, with pressurised box body with filter-ventilation device and diesel heater

Improvised military versions

In addition to serial or small-lot versions, so-called improvised versions were created by the forces of individual units, which were either adaptations of the mass-produced version or substituted for an unproduced version (as yet or never) for the needs of the unit. The review also includes an improvised version on the machine bottom of an armoured car with 30 mm PLDvK vz. 53/59M, which was created in the territory of former Yugoslavia.

Civilian version

In addition to the explicitly military versions, there were a number of versions that served in both the military and civilian sectors and are listed in the military versions overview. In addition, there were a number of purely civilian versions and these are listed in the following overview. It is neither complete nor accurate in terms of version designations. With a few exceptions, each version is identified only by a description of what it was intended to do. Unlike the military versions, it is even more difficult to distinguish when a version is a production version and when it is an improvised body. However, the civilian versions cannot be completely omitted from the list of Praga V3S versions. From the 1980s (perhaps even earlier), there are known cases when Praga V3S (and other trucks) were mobilised from the civilian sector during military exercises and included in the assemblies of the CSLA framework (or mobilised) units. Thus, there were humorous situations when various military equipment was towed by a colourful mixture of Praga V3S (or other types) trucks with the markings JZD (Unified Agricultural Cooperative in place XY), Jednota, etc., accompanied by other civilian motorcycles and cars.
