historie/History
The squadron was established on September 7, 1942 at the base Fayid in Egypt as a bombing unit. Halifax was the first in the area to be armed with aircraft. It has operated throughout the Mediterranean, over North Africa, the Aegean Sea, Sicily and Italy. On February 15, 1944, during her move to Italy, she was renamed 614. Squadron (some sources state March 3).
Already on August 12, 1944, it was reactivated at the base Driffield, again as a bomber. It conducted mostly night raids on enemy targets in Germany and occupied Europe. In December of that year, she was transferred to 100. group and added to its portfolio of tasks, in addition to bombing, also electronic warfare against the enemy, such as jamming radars or radio communications. Even after the end of the fighting, she continued to participate in the development and testing of disruptive means, until its dissolution on September 24, 1945.
During World War II, the unit was part of the RAAF, but was subject to RAF command and operational control under the designation 462 Squadron RAF.
So far, the unit was last reincarnated in April 2005, when it was restored at the base of RAAF Edinburgh (with a detachment in Canberra) as a non-flying unit providing cyber protection for the air force.
