Peruť vznikla 15. srpna 1942 na základně Feltwell jako taktická bombardovací jednotka. První bojový let provedla v prosinci téhož roku a i nadále napadala nepřátelské cíle v okupované Evropě. V červnu byla převedena do podřízenosti 2nd TAF a zapojila se do příprav a následné invaze na kontinent. Podílela se i na několika speciálních akcích, jako operace Jericho (společný útok s 464. perutí RAAF a 21. perutí RAF na vězení v Amiens 18.2.1944) a útoky na velitelství gestapa v Aarhaus (31.10.1944) a Kodani (31.3.1945). S koncem války byla 19. září 1945 rozpuštěna na základně Cambrai.
Během 2. světové války byla jednotka součástí RNZAF (novozélandské letectvo), ale podléhala velení a operační kontrole RAF pod označením No. 487 (RNZAF) Squadron RAF.
