88mm Gun Equipment X5E1 (Garrington)

A prototype manufactured by Garrington Ltd. as part of the development of a cannon that would replace a 25 pound cannon. An interesting solution was the shield, actually a kind of dome, covering the cannon operator from shards and a flash of nuclear explosions (: D). The development lasted from 1955 to 1958. During the tests, the biggest shortcomings were the high weight, which made it difficult to manipulate the cannon and the fact that after about 30 minutes of continuous firing, the space of the operator's cover was filled with flue gas and it was necessary to stop firing until the gases dispersed.
TTD:

Muzzle velocity: 716 m/s
Max. range: 15.5 km
Firing rate: 5 rounds/min

The cannon is located in the Royal Artillery Museum in Woolwich, London.

Diskuse

Dear Sirs,
on Monday, July 11, 2011, my colleague Ivan Fojtík and I visited: Firepower - The Royal Artillery Museum in London. Thanks to the kindness of Mr. Les Smith, Collections Manager of RAM, we were able to take photos in the depository of the Artillery Museum.

I present a selection of photographs that document the current state of the X5E1 exhibit.

Note
Photographs with the initials "IF" were published with the kind permission of Ing. Ivan Fojtík.
