V období 1.republiky sídlo politického a soudního okresu.
Sčítání lidu v roce 1930: 9 068 obyvatel (z toho 8 685 osob národnosti československé, 292 osob národnosti německé a 44 osob národnosti ruské).

Pro ubytování vojska byly využívány Klášterní kasárny, adaptované v roce 1920 z budov kláštera ze 13. století a přestavěného v letech 1744-1752, dále Prozatímní kasárny v budovách bývalého městského sirotčince, a koncem roku 1930 byla do užívání předána novostavba Hraničářských kasáren Jana Sladkého Koziny.
