Leopard 2 PSO (Peace Support Operations) - tank version Leopard 2 intended for use in peacekeeping operations. The machine is specially adapted especially for actions in built-up areas. The sides of the tower and the chassis are better protected from RPG hits. There is a better protected machine gun on the roof of the tower. The tank carries more sensors and a camera system to monitor the surroundings. The machine is equipped with searchlights and non-lethal weapons. An obstacle blade can be fitted at the front.
Out of the total number of 852 tanks Leopard 2 of various versions, only a few pieces were modified to the PSO standard. In the case of a large-scale peace operation, it is possible to quickly adjust other tanks.

The Rheinmetall 120mm smooth bore gun is retained but the standard armor piercing fin stabilized discarding sabot and high explosive anti-tank rounds are not optimized for urban operations. To meet this requirement, Rheinmetall has been developing a new high explosive 120mm round, which in its most sophisticated version, will be able to be programmed to explode above the target for maximum effect against dismounted or dug-in infantry.


The 7.62mm co-axial machine gun (MG) is retained but mounted on the roof is a remote controlled weapon station to provide close in protection. This could be armed with a 7.62mm or 12.7mm MG or a 40mm automatic grenade launcher, which would be operated under armor by the loader. The example shown at Eurosatory has a 12.7mm MG installed.


Traditionally the highest level of protection on almost all tanks has been over the frontal arc, but recent operational experience has shown that today, attack can come through full 360 °. For this reason, the Leopard 2 PSO is fitted with additional roof armor, as well side skirts that extend further to the hull rear and down either side of the turret.


Mounted at the front of the hull is a hydraulically operated dozer blade that can be used to clear battlefield obstacles, such as roadblocks and barricades. The dozer blade is operated by the driver under full armor protection. The optics of the Leopard 2 PSO are protected so that they cannot be damaged by rocks and stones.The Leopard 2 PSO could also fitted with the new mine protection kit that has already been integrated into a batch of German and Swedish Leopard 2 MBT, providing the crew with a higher level of survivability. While the MBT could be built to this specification, it is envisioned that most users would convert existing vehicles to this configuration. This could also have a new all-electric gun control equipment, as well as an auxiliary power unit, which would allow all the subsystems to be run with the main 1,500hp MTU diesel engine switched off.

According to the Strategy Page website, the Bundeswehr was armed earlier this year:


Leopard 2A4 ... 502 pieces
Leopard 2A5 ... 125 pieces
Leopard 2A6 ... 225 pieces


From their ranks, it is expected to convert several pieces to a version of the PSO, according to the requirements of the army, deployed in peacekeeping missions. It can be deduced from this that the PSO version is not intended for use in Germany.


The aforementioned online magazine also envisages the possibility of purchasing special US ammunition for combat in the city.

According to what I read from the elevator from the following article: Die Wiedergeburt des Kampfpanzer, which appeared on Tank-Net it looks like "PSO" will have 2 children.


1) 150 tanks, which will have a hull from the version "PSO", also marked "UrbOps", ie. dozer blade, thicker additional side armor, auxiliary source, telephone for infantry, etc. and tower Leopard 2A6M.


2) 50 tanks that get the tower from Leopard 2A4 with additional modules UrbOps (armor, weapon stations, etc.).
