T-80U

The T-80U tank is the second modernization of the T-80 tank. It includes dynamic armour, a new gun, a new turbine, an improved integrated fire control system, a laser rangefinder, IC observation devices, a crew protection device against the effects of WMD, an automatic reloading device, 2x4 smoke grenade launchers and a PTRK 9K119 Reflex (AT-11 Sniper).

The tank is characterized by very good mobility, relatively light weight and effective ballistic protection. Higher combat value is provided primarily by the new, reinforced cast turret in the front, 125 mm gun, integrated fire control system, anti-tank guided missiles fired through the tank cannon and especially differently designed dynamic armour in the front part of the turret. The upgraded 125 mm 2A46M-1 gun is stabilised in two planes, has a smooth bore and thermal barrel protection. The armament includes the 9K119 anti-tank missile set with 9M119 Reflex (AT-11 Sniper) anti-tank guided missiles. The anti-tank guided missiles have a range of 100 to 5000 m and a penetration of 650-700 mm. The new integrated fire control system also includes a thermal imaging camera with a range of up to 2,600 m, increasing the effectiveness of conducting combat operations at night and in poor weather conditions. The tank is equipped with 8 902B TUČA smoke grenade launchers, which are located on both sides of the turret. Propulsion is provided by a GTD-1250 gas turbine with extended service life and 919 kW output with mechanical gearbox. However, the high fuel consumption of the gas turbine remains a disadvantage. The belt drive system is the same as that of the T-80B. The tank is equipped as standard with a built-in set of additional dynamic armouring with higher endurance. Filtration and ventilation equipment, TVNE-4-E electro-optical driver's apparatus and ZEC13 INEJ automatic fire-fighting equipment are the same as in the basic T-80 type.

The turret is located in the centre of the hull, the engine-gear compartment including the gas turbine in the rear. The driver sits in the center of the front of the hull, the gunner sits in the left half of the turret and the commander in the right. The turret has a full 360° and the cannon's aiming range is from -5° to +14°.

Weaponry

The characteristic feature of the T-80U is the 125 mm smoothbore 2A46 M-1 gun. The gun is fitted with a stretch reference system, allowing the crew to rectify the gun without leaving the tank. The barrel can be replaced in two hours under field conditions. The cannon can fire 9M119 Reflex laser-guided anti-tank missiles and three types of ammunition: fragmentation - HE, cumulative - HEAT, anti-tank sub-caliber - APDS, HVAPFSDS. The newly developed subcaliber munitions have a depleted uranium core. The firing diameter of the tank is 45 rounds, 28 rounds are stored in the magazine. The laser-guided missiles are capable of destroying tanks or helicopters up to 5 km away. The PKT-7.62 mm machine gun with a firing diameter of 2,000 pcs. The NSV-12.7 mm anti-aircraft machine gun has a remote commander's control and an ammunition supply of 300 pcs.

The tank's fire control system

The SRP taken on by the T-80 tank in 1976 was a huge technological advancement for the time. It combined years of experience from the development and military deployment of the T-64 and T-72 types.
In particular, the SRP was modernized many times up to 1976. While at the beginning the T-80 was equipped with the TPD-2-49 sighting rangefinder of the T-64 tank, the very first modernization was carried out in 1978 with the designation of the T-80 B tank, which also underwent modernization of the SRP. This was followed in 1985 by the introduction of the T-80U, at which time the SRP tank was given technology comparable to the M1 Abrams and Leopard 2. In the meantime, there are a large number of diverse modifications, but they do not differ significantly in basic principle.

Major design features of the SRP 1A45:

- 1G46 deliberate rangefinder with 1V528 ballistic computer,
- 2E42 weapon stabilizer,
- a series of automatic data generators.

Below the night sighting telescope is the azimuth pointer, to the right of the azimuth pointer is the turret manual movement crank (sight adjustment), and immediately below to the right is the gun elevation adjustment crank (sight adjustment). Below the main sighting telescope are the weapon movement and stabilisation handles and above the handles is a toothed ring for manual range adjustment in the main sighting telescope.

There are two angled mirrors above the main sighting telescope, which are arranged to allow forward and right forward observation. There is one angled mirror on the top left for viewing to the left. Next, there is the control box for the HERE 902 B smoke machine.

Below the angled mirror is the gunner's control panel for the SRP and automatic reloader. The triangular lockers belong to the on-board communication system.

The SRP provides target reconnaissance and engagement from the gunner's position as well as the commander's. Deviations from normal firing conditions are continuously detected via sensors (crosswind, own and target speed, directional angle to target, etc.) and are evaluated by the ballistic computer.

The sighting rangefinder has a separate stabilization of the field of view in two planes. The field of view and magnification of the day sighting rangefinder can change continuously from 3.6 to 12 times magnification.

The integrated laser rangefinder
is locked onto the target by a central aiming mark. In addition to the measured and set distance, other information is shown in the field of view. Thus, the gunner receives information via the type of selected ammunition, the state of fire readiness up to whether the commander has not taken over the TK alignment or, alternatively, has not assigned a target. The stabilisation of the gun and turret follows the primary stabilisation of the sighting unit of the sighting telescope. The information necessary for this is supplied by the flywheel block to the electronic weapon stabilization devices and finally to the ballistic computer .

The ballistic computer takes into account the change in distance during the tank's own movement, depending on the directional angle to the target and depending on the tank's own speed. In addition to the above data, it also takes into account air temperature, bullet temperature, air pressure, and barrel diameter increase due to wear.

The gunner's night vision device was originally an active infrared telescope. In the meantime it has been replaced, according to manufacture or customer wishes, by an active/passive infrared binocular after the case by a thermal imaging camera. With the help of the video equipment, the commander has the possibility to see the same image as the shooter at his location.

The gunner's night sighting telescope was originally the TPN-1-49, which was used in almost all Russian tanks. It was later replaced by the TPN-3-49 active/passive night sighting telescope. Currently, the active/passive infrared targeting telescope type Buran-PA is used. The telescope also has an independently stabilised field of view. A thermal imaging camera with an Agava-2 type telescope or a foreign instrument is also used.

The PNK-4S targeting and observation set was developed for the commander. Its basis consists of a combined day/night targeting telescope TKN-4S with independent stabilization in the vertical plane.
It has a 7.5 times magnification and includes an integrated active/passive infrared night observation channel. To the right and left of the TKN-4S are 2 angled mirrors for observation. The TKN-4S is built into the rotatable command turret and can be sighted with the entire turret in the horizontal plane and stabilizing the field of view in the vertical plane.
Below the TKN is the video image screen of the gunner's night sighting telescope. On the right are the commander controls for the SRP and AN.

Stabilization in the horizontal plane of the commander's rotating turret is provided by coupling via an electromechanical coupling and gearbox to the turret's rotating wreath, since it is reversed in this case it retains its sighting direction in the horizontal plane also when the turret is rotated. This allows the commander to guide the gunner. If the commander spots a higher priority target, he can guide the turret in the horizontal plane to the target after pressing the "Guide to Target" button. In doing so, the aiming axis of the gunner will be aligned with the aiming axis of the commander's observation instrument. As a last resort, the commander may conduct gun and machine gun fire from his position. The 12.7 millimeter NSVT antiaircraft machine gun is also commander-controlled. To fire at air targets, the commander uses a special PZU-7 sight, which is located to the left of the TKN-4S.
