Poznámka:
Note:
41. sáriový letoun Dewoitine D.520 byl uoraven do podoby prototypu D.521, M. Doret s tímto letounem poprvé vzlétl dne 9. února 1940. Stroj byl v důsledku posunu těžiště směrově nestabilní, během dalších testů s ním pilot Leopold Galy dosáhl rychlosti 570 km/h. Poslední (sedmý) let uskutečnil Marcel Doret dne 23. března, letoun byl zpětně přestavěn do podoby D.524. The D.521 was a variant of the basic Dewoitine D.520 that would have been powered by a Rolls Royce Merlin III engine. The idea was first suggested in October 1939, but work did not begin in earnest until early 1940. This variant was developed by SNCAM. The first prototype (modified from D.520 No. 41) flew on 9 February 1940. During its seven test flights, the D.521 demonstrated a superior rate of climb and a top speed of 352 mph at altitude. After its last test flight on 23 March 1940 the D.521 prototype was returned to the D.524 prototype.

Dewoitine D.521

Brief History:
The French Air Force was concerned about the possible cessation of supplies of Hispano-Suiza 12Y-45 engines, so sometime in November 1939 came a proposal to mass production from the 251st machine type Dewoitine D.520 for type D.521, which was to be powered by a British engine Rolls-Royce Merlin III with an output of 1,030 horsepower. The project was immediately canceled, but sometime in late 1939, these works were resumed. The production aircraft was withdrawn from production D.520 C.1 and into this machine was built into the said engine. Adjustments continued relatively quickly that on February 9, 1940, the aircraft could be flown, but the Merlin engine was heavier, which shifted the center of gravity (the aircraft was heavy on the head) and lost directional stability.
Several (7?) Test flights were performed and the project was stopped. In the end, there was also a shortage of Merlins in France, so the D.521 returned to the workshop, where another engine was given, this time the French Hispano-Suiza 12Z with an output of 1,200 horses. Thus, type D.521 ceased to exist and became Dewoitine D.524. The planned armament was to consist of two cannons Hispano HS-404 caliber 20 mm and two machine guns MAC 1934 M39 caliber 7.5 mm, all in the wings in an unsynchronized design. The whole project could be considered "What if", because the Merlin engines went preferentially to the Amiot factory for the production of bombers.
