The Sendai class was essentially a modified Nagara class. The changes were mainly in the area of boilers: only one boiler was adapted to burn mixed fuel (coal + fuel oil), this boiler had a separate stack and therefore ships of this class had 4 stacks. The ships were finished with a take-off platform at the front of the ship. However, they did not have catapults until 1929, so they did not carry any aircraft either. In 1934, the take-off platform was moved to the rear and the single main mast was replaced by a tripod mast.
During the war, the ships were mainly used to protect convoys (especially during invasions) and to support landing troops. She took part in the invasions of Malaya, Sumatra, the Andaman Islands, Guadalcanal and Midway. She played an important role in the pursuit of the British "Z" Alliance (she took a report of its location from submarine I 58 and passed it on to headquarters). She was destroyed by a radar-guided gun. by fire from the American light cruisers USS Cleveland, Montpelier, Columbia, and Denver, and sunk by the guns of the USS by the fire of the U.S. destroyer USS Charles F. Ausburne on November 2, 1943 in the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay on Bougainville Island while attempting to land a landing party against the American invasion of that island.
