1. gardová tanková armáda

(1-я гвардейская танковая армия)

The 1st Guards Tank Army was formed by order of the People's Commissar of Defence dated 25 April 1944, No. 0016, by renaming the 1st Tank Army, which had earned the honorific "Guards", citing a contemporary order: for skillful performance of combat tasks to defeat the German invaders, for heroism and courage displayed, for perseverance, courage, discipline and organization.

As part of the 1st Ukrainian Front, she took part in the Lviv-Sandomierz offensive operation. In early September, the army was withdrawn to the reserve Headquarters of the Supreme Command, in the second half of November it was assigned to 1st. Belarusian Front, in which she took part in the Warsaw-Poznań, East Pomerania (from 8 to 27 March 1945 as part of the 2nd Belarusian Front) and Berlin Offensive operations. The army was particularly successful in the Warsaw-Poznań Operation, during which its troops fought a distance of 500 km (500 mi) in 18 days, liberating hundreds of Polish towns and villages. All units of the army were decorated with orders, most of them were also awarded honorary titles. More than 80,000 soldiers were awarded medals and orders, 117 of them received the highest decoration: the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

After the end of World War II, the 1st Guards Tank Army remained on German territory in the city of Dresden where it was renamed 1st Guards Mechanized Army on 27 May 1946.
