T-34/85

Medium tank manufactured in the Czechoslovak license T-34/85.

The agreement on the grant of a license for the production of T-34/85 tanks in Czechoslovakia was signed between the governments of Czechoslovakia and the USSR in July 1949. Production documentation was delivered from the Soviet Union in November 1949 and conditions. ČKD Sokolovo subsequently became the main supplier of tanks, Škoda's plants in Pilsen (engines), SMZ in Dubnice nad Váhom (towers and cannons) and JV Stalin's plants in Martin (hulls).

The first T-34/85 licensed tank was completed on September 1, 1951, followed by its company tests. By the beginning of October 1951, eight tanks were produced, two of which participated in abbreviated troop tests. However, due to the significant failure of tanks (directional system, main clutch, final drive, wiring) ended poorly, which was caused by poor technological discipline and quality of production. Serial production at ČKD began in February 1952 and took place there until December 1953. In the meantime, based on a government decision, production gradually moved to Slovakia to the J. V. Stalin's Plant in Martin. The zero five-piece series of T-34/85 tanks was produced here in May 1952. Serial production here began in September 1952 and lasted until the end of 1956.

Between 1951 and 1952, the army took over 81 tanks, on which 280 failures appeared (of which 250 were caused by poor production quality). For example, the production of 500 copies was planned for 1954, which was eventually 100% met. However, this did not go without problems - the quality of production was still low (allegedly even lower than for machines made in the USSR), which mainly concerned gearboxes, chassis suspension or engines.

T-34/85 tanks in the basic design were produced in Czechoslovakia in the years 1951 to 1956 2 736 pieces (in 1951 25 pieces were made, in 1952 the production gave 395 copies and the following year 1 050 vehicles, in 1956 was produced last 515 tanks). All T-34/85 tanks produced between 1955 and 1956 were exported. Of the total production, 1,437 machines were designated for the Czechoslovak army (731 produced in ČKD, 706 in ZJVS). In addition to them, the Czechoslovak army also received T-34/85 tanks directly from the Soviet Union. The first 67 Soviet T-34/85 (supplemented by five T-34/76) was taken over in the summer of 1945 from armament 1. Czechoslovak Tank Brigade from the group 1. Czechoslovak Army Corps in the USSR. The following year, 65 vehicles were imported from the Soviet Union. In 1949, another 114 tanks were delivered. Deliveries of T-34/85 tanks from the USSR ended in 1950, when the last 120 units were imported to Czechoslovakia.

Licensed tanks T-34/85 were between 1952 and 1958 introduced into the armament of tank regiments from a set of tank and mechanized divisions. A number of tanks were also used in 1. heavy self-propelled regiment and tank self-propelled regiments of rifle divisions.

Probably the highest number of concurrently used T-34/85 tanks introduced in the Czechoslovak army was reached in 1956, when 1,701 copies were used. In 1967, 1,120 T-34/85 tanks were registered in the ČSLA armament. At the end of 1971, the Czechoslovak People's Army still had around 780 T-34/85 vehicles.

In 1948, Czechoslovakia saw the complete takeover of power in the state by the Communist Party and the subsequent shift of the army to armaments unified with the Soviet army. Following the model adopted from the USSR, the Czechoslovak army began the construction of tank divisions as the main fighting means of the ground troops. For this construction, however, a considerable number of medium tanks are needed, the production of which Czechoslovakia is able to secure by its own power thanks to its industrial potential.

For these needs, the Czechoslovakia acquired the licensing rights for the production of the T-34-85 tank in 1949. The design and technological documentation was transferred, from plant N°183. Technical assistance was provided by Soviet specialists. Initially, the tanks were assembled from imported parts. Later, from parts produced in the Czechoslovakia and the USSR. Hence the "period" blanks.
In winter 1952, the first T-34-85 made entirely in the Czechoslovakia left the ČKD Praha "Sokolovo" plant, with the turret supplied by the Krivan n.p. Martin steelworks. The second complete production line for the T-34-85 was started, after the production was moved to the rear, in Rudy Martin. Here, on 16 May 1948, the foundation stone was laid for the future branch plant of Kriváň ČKD Bratislava.

This included a grey cast iron foundry, a large machine shop producing tanks, wagons, construction cranes and other heavy equipment, a small machine shop responsible for engines, gearboxes and heat treatment, and a steelworks casting castings for special production. In 1951, the production of T-34-85 tank turrets began here, a forge, producing forgings and heat-treating semi-finished special steels, and lastly a locomotive. However, we are already in the 1960s and special production is T-54 and T-55.

Around the time of the construction of the small machine shop, the existing enterprise, according to the decree of the Ministry of Industry of the Czechoslovak Republic from July 1949, split and on 1 January 1950 a separate enterprise Kriváň n.p. Martin was established, renamed first to Závody J.V.Stalin and again in the 60s to Turčianske strojárně Martin n.p., later VHJ ZTS and finally ZTS Martin n.p., this name and the nature of production did not change until 1989. So much for the second manufacturer of the T-34-85 in the Czechoslovakia.

The T-34-85 was produced in Czechoslovakia until 1956 and 3,185 battle tanks were produced. The "second line," at the J.V. Stalin Works, later the ZTS in Rudy Martin, produced 1,785 T-34-85s, 126 MT-34, 641 SU-100s, designated SD-100 by the CSLA, 285 VT-34, and 150 JT-34; that is, 2,987 T-34 chassis. In 1951, the number was 25 tanks, in 1952 it was 395 tanks, and in 1953, when it reached its peak, it was 1,050 tanks. This is from the factory records of ZTS Martin n.p.
Part of the production went for export, mainly for the needs of the army of Egypt - 820 machines and Syria - 120 machines, while only in 1952-1954 310 machines were also exported to Romania and 120 machines to Bulgaria. However, Czechoslovak-made T-34-85 tanks also appeared in other countries. India, Iraq, Yemen shared 30 machines each, Mali received 10 machines, probably also from CSLA surpluses.

The Czechoslovak-produced T-34-85 tanks differed somewhat from their siblings produced in the USSR and the PLR. The first marker was higher technological discipline and thus quality, the next was the surface finish of the cast parts. The overall design of these tanks was of a higher quality than the USSR production. For example, the dimensions were in the mm range and not cm or even dm as in the USSR.
Design changes included:
- the fitting of "Notek" column running lights on machines imported from the USSR and the first series produced at ČKD Sokolovo
- shifting of the command turret more to the left, on the left side of the turret the characteristic sickle-shaped follower appears under this turret
- mounting of the headlight and infrared lamp under a common cover structure on the frontal armour
- relocation of the horn for infantry signals to the left rear corner of the hull and its protection by an armoured cover
- installation of a compressor, for filling emergency and winter start cylinders, directly into the tank, to the left of the driver
- the principle of the "self-draining" lamp - the "blowtorch" - was installed in the cooling and lubrication system
- new air cleaners of type BTI-3, with ejector extraction of dirt, were installed
- larger radiators with a capacity of 107 litres
- instead of the left oil tank, an additional fuel tank, because the auxiliary oil cooler, of Czechoslovak manufacture, on the left liquid cooler, was fully sufficient also as an oil tank
- fuel supply was ensured by a BNK-12 B rotary vane fuel pump and an NK-1 twelve-plunger injection pump
- the main dry multi-disc "steel on steel" clutch has an arrangement of 11 driving + 11 driven blades
- The gearbox has 5 forward and 1 reverse speed with the possibility of reduction by demultiplier
- cast iron directional brake lining used
- two fixtures for attaching the logs to the tracks are fitted as standard on the left side of the hull
- "underwater kit" for overcoming obstacles up to 3.5 m deep and 300 m wide by wading as standard equipment
- disposable electrically fired smoke bombs marked as MDS by the CSLA, or other additional tanks, or even diesel drums, could be mounted on universal brackets at the rear of the hull

The machine was, as we know, well armored for its time, but in the Czechoslovak documents the hull is characterized as "used for storing aggregates, protecting the crew and internal equipment from infantry weapons fire and the effects of grenade shrapnel." The tank's turret is described as "cast from a single piece of armoured steel, with sloping sides, transitioning to a cylindrical section on the underside with a welded upper orbit circle and a roof of welded armour plate." The diesel engine gave the vehicle reasonably good handling characteristics even at this time. The T-34-85 used an effective 85mm vz.44 calibre gun based on its ZISS-53 model and two 7.62mm DT/DTM machine guns as its main armament. The tank's crew consisted of 5 men: the commander, the gunner and loader in the turret, the driver and the driver's assistant - the tank's front machine gunner. The main task of the driver's assistant, however, was to help shift gears, often with the help of a hammer. The tank was developed for wartime mass production, when commanders often calculated its service life to be only a few hours. Aimed firing from the gun was carried out from short stops, as the gun was not yet stabilized and everything depended on the skill and coherence of the crew.

The shots in feature films, when the crew at full speed hits the enemy machines with the first shot at maximum range, were really only possible in a movie scenario.

The following versions were thus produced in the Czechoslovakia:
- T-34-85 model 45
- T-34-85 V, i.e. T-34-85 K pattern 45 - commanding
- MT-34 bridge with scissor bridge
- VT-34 recovery on T-34 chassis
- JT-34 crane ( more perfect than Russian )
- PCHT-34 anti-chemical - reconnaissance
- PB-34 heavy bulldozer

The Much of what is written here has already been mentioned above, and in the article on the T-34-85 in the USSR the authors certainly drew on similar material to mine. The difference from Martin Smisek's data is probably due to the fact that I have materials counting all machines on the T-34 "chassis" produced, assembled, or rebuilt at both plants.

Adaptation of T-34/85 tank to overcome water obstacle

The T-34/85 tank adaptation kit for underwater driving allows the tank to overcome, by driving on the bottom, a water obstacle with a maximum depth of 3.5 m and a maximum width of 120 m.

When overcoming water obstacles with a width of 120 to 300 m, it is necessary to make a special modification to ensure the operation of the engine by leading the suction pipe from the air cleaners with a rubber hose to the fighting compartment.

Tank preparation is carried out in two stages:

(a) at a distance of 5 to 30 km from the water obstacle, a partial modification is carried out, which is completed in 1 to 1.5 hours by a trained crew,

(b) at a distance of 100 to 500 m from the water obstacle, the completion of the vehicle modification is carried out, which takes 15 to 20 minutes.

After the tank is out of the water, it is possible to prepare the tank for combat in 1 to 2 minutes. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to fully assemble the rig after reaching a concealed position.

The rig allows direct guidance of the tank by the ride commander and provides the crew with the ability to abandon the tank if it becomes stuck in the water.

The rig came in two versions :

- the 1956 version
- the 1959 version

Tank adaptations for underwater travel are divided into permanent and temporary.

Permanent modifications

Material :

- suspension shaft seals (rubber material - 280 x 170 x 80 mm),
- felt strip to seal the ball base of the tank turret (60 x 1 x 5500 mm - 1 piece),
- rubber strip to seal the ball base of the tower (60 x 3 x 4850 mm - 1 pc),
- steel strip to seal the ball base of the tower (15 x 0.7 x 5500 mm - 1 pc),
- cyclops clips

Temporary modifications

Material :

- cannon mask sheet (material : Rubberized cloth - 1 pc),
- canvas cover for sealing the ceiling over the engine compartment (material : Rubberized cloth - 1 pc),
- canvas cover for the lower machine gun (material : rubberized fabric - 1 pc),
- wide chimney for air intake,
- rubber cap for barrel mouth - 3 pcs,
- protective valve for engine exhaust - 2 pcs,
- electro-optic signal device - 1 pc (for guiding the tank driver by the commander),
- accessories - rubber gaskets,
- consumables - sealants (Resolvan PV 10), adhesives (v.No. 6286), asbestos rope, tow

Diskuse

According to some sources, our T-34/85s "visited" the Soviet Union on their way to Cuba, where they were overhauled and modernized.

Pictured here are Cuban T-34/85 of Czechoslovak manufacture at a parade in Havana. Note the waveform on the front hull armour and the Notek obscuring searchlight on the left side of the hull.

I will also contribute my bit to the mill. Around 1994 I used to go to eastern Slovakia, where I went up to Dargov a few times to take some pictures of T 34/85. I am sending you one. In the next attachments is T 34/85, "stored in an unnamed military unit in Nitra. So take a look. The modellers might find it helpful in the build.

P.S. I have taken pictures of the interior of these "preserved monuments" of ours, as a memento of how we generally value historical exhibits.

This tank is a post-war production Made in ČKD "Sokolovo", according to the design and technological documentation, plant N°183. If it has the original wheels and turret, it was undoubtedly produced before the end of 1952. Until this date, the T-34-85 was assembled from both parts made in the Czechoslovakia and parts imported from the USSR.
The horn in the armor cover on the left rear engine hull armor speaks for this statement. A rope splicing shekel from German tank kits and a rope loop holder for self-release. So, signs of CKD production. On the other hand, the front hull has a cast axe, the light on the left front hull armour, the original horn behind it, cast wheels, the turret maybe still of war production are the signs of the production of plant N°183, i.e. USSR. I'm not sure about the ZIS-S-53 gun and its mask, they are very well crafted for a war production, but it may be a post-war production of the N°9 gunnery or the J.V.Stalin Plant, (later ZTS, in Red Martin - gunnery gunnery"). Just a beautiful glue, the interior or the carriage number would say more.

Quite an interesting photo. The Absence of the intake pipe or something similar - air for the engine is sucked probably the tower with the open hatches. Do you think it was a common practice or test ?.

Depth of the ford, a dna profile, the angle of descent of the ramp to the water obstacles and the pitch angle of the exit from it is determined in advance (done by the forces and means of the engineer or vševojskového survey, where appropriate, allocated to members of his own unit) and, if possible, brod ženijně adjusts...
So it is known in advance whether the water will be "after the ball, after the breasts or around the neck"... whether or not it is necessary to use a kit for wading or right kit for driving tanks under water...
The T-34 with the air while driving a tank under water (depth of water obstacles throughout the profile of the runway is higher than the highest point of the tower of the vehicle) he was driving "down the chimney", mounted instead of the periscope of the charger, it was assumed-when flooding příklopů loader and commander on the ceiling of the tower, the crew was getting the hatchway the master and this is utěsňoval as the last.
Overcoming obstacles to churning, the so-called "quiet water"... Nice is too see how the water "boils" at the output of the exhaust gas and behind the tower..

Oh good, the right or the left:-)
But the way it takes air for the engine? Must be those top hatches open even under fire? You drove someone in such a MODE in the T-34, when the engine sucks in liters of air from the space for the crew? I'm interested in.
Thanks.

This is the text to which it responds beteer >> So you don't know, but if you ever put the chimney on the hatch nabiječe, in his place, so he could only act on the peaceful brody and even that doesn't seem. Around the hatch nabiječe there is no adjustment (screws, surfaces, etc.). In contrast, the command would be quite possible, after removing the hatch there is a turned path which can be sealed and the chimney is fastened by means of úpinek. (See CW-34 Made in PLR) Similarly, it is up to date with all tanks series "T".
Battle of brody were carried out using kits PTCh-34-85, allowing the normal line to the tanks to overcome water obstacles almost out of the running.

PTCh-34-85 featured a T-34-85, provided with a suction pipe for the engine, a diameter of 130 mm and a length of 3.4 m. This pipe was fastened place periskopického device nabiječe on the ceiling of the tower. Emergency exit from the tank should run through the driver's hatch, after flooding the tank, the crew members were for this case equipped with autonomous oxygen breathers type of KIP.
When wading are closed and sealed all the flaps on the inlet air to the engine and the transmission. The air to the engine brings just by using the suction of the chimney, through the fighting compartment and removed the "motor mount" between the fighting and engine compartment. This method has to guarantee the flow and thus the exchange of air. According to the story, it is better to drive so that was above water, at least the commander's turret, because in a closed poklopech and the passage of the air through the chimney pretty good"swish"
Is that good enough? #Crazy.

A year and a half ago, I wrote: "So I don't know about you, but if a chimney was ever fitted to the charger hatch, that is, instead of it, it could only have been a peace ford, and even then I don't think so. There is no modification around the charger hatch (screws, surfaces, etc). On the other hand, on the commander's hatch it would be quite possible, after removing the hatch there is a turned track which can be sealed and the chimney fixed with clips (see CW-34 Made in PLR). It is similar on all "T" series tanks up to now.

Today I have proof that I was wrong, I found a photo where the chimney above the charger is really there.Embarassed

I'm attaching the photo. Yeah, and in front of the chimney is the bottom part of the combat tube with the antenna grommet.
