Piranha II (1980)
Due to the success of the 8x8 chassis, Mowag decided to focus on this version. Several modifications were made: The hull was lengthened by 290 mm to provide more interior space. Further increases in internal space were provided by side storage extensions and improvements were made to the armouring, powertrain and gearbox compartment layout.

A 4x4 version was developed for the Swiss Army as the Mowag Spy (experimental reconnaissance vehicle in 1981). Versions with 6x6 and 10x10 chassis remained as demonstration only.

The operators of the APC Piranha II were Australia (ASLAV 25), Canada (Bison APC & Coyote Reco), Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sweden (one vehicle tested), USA (base for USMC LAV25A2). The Swiss Army used the APC-93 and APC-93/99 versions.

The Piranha II was supplied with a wide range of armament, from the basic with a 12.7mm machine gun in the turret, or with a 76.2mm remotely operated firing station, or in the PVO versions with cannon armament: 20mm, 25mm, or 30mm; there were also versions with a 90mm gun, or with an 81mm mortar. Optional equipment included full collective NBC protection, air conditioning and optoelectronic night vision systems.

The Giat Industries TS 90 weapon station developed for Mowag, known from Eurosatory 1986, consisted of a 90mm calibre medium pressure gun capable of firing APFSDS-T, HEAT-T, HE, smoke and canister shells. In total it carried 43 pieces, 18 of which were stored in the turret. The main gun was coupled with a 7.62 mm machine gun.
