Since the Hummel self-propelled howitzer carried a reserve supply of only 30 rounds, an ammunition version was developed to meet the needs of self-propelled artillery units armed with these self-propelled howitzers. The howitzer itself was removed and the hole in the nose of the superstructure was plugged with 10 mm thick sheet metal. Ammunition racks for 48 rounds were mounted in the fighting compartment.
