Brief history:
Two prototypes of the fighter aircraft Mitsubishi Ki-33 accounted for already the second attempt of the factory Mitsubishi Jukugyo To. To., when trying to offer the army air force very good design of the on-board fighter type 96, also known under the designation A5M Claude. The first attempt was the modification of the prototype factory marked Ka-14, that he was in 1935, deprived of all maritime facilities in the army system Kitai was designated as Ki-18 and participated in the competition with dvouplošným fighter the Kawasaki Ki-10 Perry and jednoplošnou Nakajimou Ki-11. The contest then won the Perry, which, thanks to the excellent dexterity was accepted into the armament.
Already the next year held another contest, the goal of this competition was to select for the army air force modern jednoplošnou fighter. Factory Mitsubishi "denavalizovala" for this contest two on-board fighters A5M2a, removed everything nautical equipment and gear, the engine Kotobuki was mistaken for a military variant of the Ha-1a. The cabin remained closed. Modifications were completed in the early summer of 1936, and both machines were delivered to the Kagamigahara Rikugun Kokogijutsi Kenkyujo (Army air technical research institute in Kagamigahaře), where they held a comparative test.
The exam didn't go for the Ki-33 well, he was the second fastest aircraft (the fastest was Ki-28), the second from the point of view of dexterity (most skillful was the Ki-27), the hardest climbed and accelerated. Ki-33 carried the largest stock of ammunition for his two machine guns and had the longest range and flight endurance. These properties, however, have not prevented its exclusion from the competition, the winner was declared the aircraft Nakajima Ki-27 Nate.
