In 10/1939, the company Rheinmetall-Borsig AG designed a special ammunition tank for transporting and supplying super-heavy self-propelled mortars Karl-Gerät 040 (later also Gerät 041). The program used the chassis of standard medium tanks Pz.Kpfw.IV. Gradually, with the production of individual painters,ammunition machines were also created, which used successively several development versions of tanks (Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.D, Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.E and Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.F).
A new superstructure was designed for the vehicles, so that a quadruplet of cartridges for the self-propelled gun could be carried. A Wippkran electric crane (2.5t) was installed on the hull. Its electrical power was supplied by a generator driven by a two-cylinder internal combustion engine, which in standard tank versions Pz.Kpfw.IV served to rotate the turret. The crew consisted of four men. The ammunition machine carried four rounds of ammunition. A total of 13 ammunition tanks were produced. Each engineer was assigned two tanks (Gerät Nr.I - VI). One vehicle was designated for the test engineer number "Gerät Nr.VII". Later, the organizational structure was not so fixed and vehicles were allocated according to the need of the deployed machines.
As of 29 September 1944, six tanks were reportedly assigned to Batterie 428 and Batterie 638, two were in Waffenamt condition (adapted for Gerät 040), a pair of tanks were converted for Gerät 041, and a pair of tanks were ready for handover.
