Poznámka:
Note:
Nakadžima Ki-58 byl těžkým doprovodným stíhačem křižníkového typu postaveném na základě těžkého bombardéru Nakadžima Ki-49 Donryu. Celý projekt vznikl z prostého důvodu - žádný armádní stíhač neměl takový dolet, aby mohl doprovázet právě zaváděné bombardéry Donryu po celé délce jejich letu. The Nakajima Ki-58 was a long range escort fighter based on the Nakajima Ki-49 Donryu heavy bomber. As no fighter with sufficient range was then in production, Nakajima designed the Ki-58 to provide some support for the Ki-49, which was about to enter service.

Nakajima Ki-58
キ58试作多座掩护战斗机

Brief history:
In 1939, Rikugun Koku Hombu's engineering department came to the idea that bomber losses over China could be reduced by using heavy escort fighters built directly from bombers. This idea was also tested by air forces of other countries. Thus, the Japanese Army Air Force ordered the construction of three prototypes designated Ki-58. These were modified Nakajima Ki-49-IIa heavy bombers. These machines were to accompany the Ki-49-I bombers.
The bomb bay was cancelled and an armoured tub for two gunners was installed under this cancelled bomb bay. The aircraft was overloaded, ungainly and slow, and it is the great good fortune of the crews of these machines that Rikugun Koku Hombu abandoned production and operational deployment in time, unlike the Naval Air Force, which deployed its "flying cruiser" Mitsubishi G6M1 11.

This is the only photo I have seen of the Nakajima Ki-58, note the gunner's tub in place of the bomb bay.
